I'm a bit confused by this device? It would only really be useful if you had a receiver with no HDMIs and multi-channel ins. And even then, it is unclear if that would work as I'm pretty sure the PS3 ONLY decodes Tru-Hd sound formats as PCM that it sends over HDMI. If you tried to output it via those multichannel connections on this repeater my impression is that it would be no different than running the toslink from the PS3 to the receiver....i.e., you'd only get Dobly Digital and DTS surround formats!
Am I wrong. Because the UNIT/repeater would have to have Dobly Tru-HD and and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders in it?

The PS3 decodes the DTS-HD Master and Dolby True HD signals internally and bitstreams it out PCM through the HDMI output. The posted device converts the PCM signal to analog, so basically it is only a PCM/analog converter.

No, it wouldn't need them. PS3 already decodes the tracks to LPCM which then would be split into multichannel analog output. No, I don't use one, although I'd be interested in one if it was cheaper. -
You're right, the above unit would have to be able to take the decoded PCM from the HDMI coming in from the PS3 and then turn that into multi-channel analog sound and pass that to multi-in on a receiver! Can it DO THAT? Because otherwise...what's the point?

You got it. Was wondering if it was worth a crud for people that do not have hdmi and if it worked as stated. I am retarded with this stuff, lol. -
Hey BigMac,
If it does that and can still pass the video to your HDTV it might be worth it in order to save your AVR. I'd think about it, if I didn't have HDMIs!

I have hdmi but my son does not and thought this would be a good alternative route to take for him. I asked because this stuff is greek to me.
Corrects digital error and automatically provides equalisation up to 40dB
Supports uncompressed digital LPCM7.1 5.1 or 2 channels & compressed digital Bitstream through HDMI Input and output ports.
Supports digital Dolby 5.1 & LPCM 2 channels output via optical
Supports LPCM 7.1 channels output through multi-channel output ports.
thanks for the input you all. much appreciated.
