Hello

I'm going too be adding the back center surround speaker too my Denon system so I'll be entering the 6.1 realm soon. I was wondering if theres a list of DVD's somewhere on the net that have either the 5.1-EX or the DTS-ES encoding on them. I've been trying to buy dvds' that have the extra back center track on them and have quite a few but since i'm going this route would like to continue to only buy the es and ex dvds.

Thanks!!

    Hello

Hmmmm, I was under the impression reading the manual that when the Denon detected the extra channel then you would switch on the 6.1 to get the "true" 6.1 surround. So what your saying is normal 5.1 dvds will use that back center even though its not encoded with 6.1?

Well instead of asking, pop in a DVD and switch it to 6.1 and find out yourself. i dont own a 6.1 setup - but my System dont have DTS on the DVD player but it does on the receiver, its not true - but its there.

You can tell the receiver to "make-up" a rear channel signal from a 5.1 recording. It basically mixes a bit from the surround channels and sends it to the rear.

I have learned there is DD 5.1 EX which is an encoded matrix channel which is stripped off the surrounds and sent to the rear channel. There is a DTS-ES Matrix which is the same concept. With the DD/DTS matrix stuff, you will still HEAR everything from the side surrounds if you just have a 5.1 set-up. With a 6.1 rig capable of decoding matrix stuff, some of what you were hearing from the side surrounds will be stripped off and sent to the rear channel.

Conversely, there is a DTS 6.1 ES Discrete, which actually does have a discrete rear channel that you WOULD NOT hear at all from the side surrounds in a 5.1 set-up. This is a true 6.1 signal, IMO - the matrix stuff is really not.

    Hello

Thanks for the info, it will be interesting when I get the speaker and get it up and running. There is a light that comes on, on the receiver when it "sees" the extra back channel and I was looking at the set up yesterday on the receiver and does show matrix settings in there. The new Ultimate Stargate edition supposedly has the 6.1 discrete on it and am hoping to find more dvds in the future.

    Thanks

    Try these:

    Gladiator
    Seven (2 disc special edition)
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2 disc special edition)
    The Haunting (DTS 6.1 edition)

These should most definitely get you going and give your 6.1 system a very nice workout. There are plenty more 6.1 movies out there, but these seem to be some of the best ones that I can remember.

Try going to www.dvdempire.com and doing a search for DTS movies. They do have a seperate database for only DTS movies.

    Hello

Okay I looked through those links and read through alot of the posts on the first link you gave me. I started to get a little confused though on all this dts-ex and dd-ex technology.

Apparently some dvds' have a "true" seperate back channel and the labeling shows dts-es 6.1 and your reciever will see this "flag" and enable 6.1.

The othere dvds' that have ex or es encoding won't flag the receiver and you have to manually enable the 6.1? And do you have to have the matrix enabled to take advantage of this?

    Thanks,
