I think this is a pretty good deal....a brand-new Yamaha universal player, directly from Yamaha for about $90.00 shipped....

Yamaha DV-SL5860 universal player, directly from Yamaha

However, here's potentially a better deal than even that Yamaha universal player.....actually, it's another Yamaha universal player!

Yamaha DVD-S1700 universal player at Newegg.com for $110.00 shipped

It's certainly a classier-looking player, with an aluminum front face plate and those big support feet. It also has more powerful video processing and a detachable power cord. And according to this post at audioasylum.com, the S1700 sounds excellent as well.

However, don't give up on the SL5860 yet....because according to a buyer of the SL5860 that followed my link over at stevehoffman.tv, it also recognizes HDCDs. Don't forget that the SL5860 also does CD upsampling, which the S1700 doesn't do.

I use a Yamaha Universal DVD/CD changer as my main CD unit...it also has 4X upsampling for CDs. It's not a bad little player in its price range. Not going to take on some higher end units but OK!

I tried the DVD-S1700 last year. It had trouble with DVD's freezing after the unit had been on for a while (warmed up), especially DVD-R's. I returned it to Crutchfield and exchnged it for another, it did the same exact thing. I read over at AVS that it is a common problem with this model, and the 1800 as well.

It did seem to play SACD's and DVD-A's just fine though.
