Sony reports $1 billion loss

SACD, you can't copy them,
Actually you can Ben. There IS a way but you have to have the right equipment and software. I know because one of my musician friends has done it. Long story short, you have to send the cutting master file on AIT tape or disk to a plant. He knows a few peeps and they will do it anytime he needs. For the average consumer though it is 'almost' impossible, but there is a way if you are creative enough. For all the trouble though, it's just easier to spend a few bucks and pick up what you want. No waiting for snail mail.

It has been a long time since investors react based on sound financial or business factors. It is all about perception and psycholgical expectations vs actual results. There are lots of example of companies posting increased or even "record" profits...but the stock price drops because it didn't meet the "expectations". Investors often react to the information...even when they don't understand the reasons or underlying factors. It is why we are seeing such wide swings on a daily basis today...investors react based on heresay, speculation, fear etc...anything but sound financial analysis. Investors try to outguess the market and speculate on what may happen rather than invest for the long term based on soundness and stabilty."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I would imagine Sony Music, with SACD or not, is losing money left and right. The current economic downturn is so encompassing that almost no firm can escape from it. Besides, $1 billion is nothing when compared to Panasonic's reported $4 billion loss. Even Toyota has received financial bailout from the Japanese government.

Agreed. Instead of trying to "corner the market" in any particular format...if they would use their name and marketing clout to support the various trends before they change (and they WILL change - more and more rapidly it seems) Sony would would not only be the "1,000 lb gorilla" of the A/V world...they would be the "VERY PROFITABLE 1,000 lb gorilla" of the A/V world."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Bingo! Their own greed led to their losses. You would have thought they would have learned that lesson from their Beta days.:rolleyes:Agreed. I'll never buy another one of their products again, so, they could completely tank tommorow, and I wouldn't give a damn.I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

If a piece of Sony gear or product meets my needs, I'll buy it. I have nothing against Sony like I do M or B. I just think they are very short sighted in the way they do business. I guess they don't mind striking out quite a bit...if they can hit REALLY BIG home runs from time to time. Not the way I would approach the business...but hey...they have done ok over the years. Hardly anyone is making money in the current economic environment...maybe Sony is losing less than the others. I think they will survive and be a player in the A/V world for a long time."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Steve,
The interesting thing is that their business model and technology development ventures seem to be working rather well. Their strategic and management decisions seem to be emotionally based and flawed.
You are aware that an American is the Sony Chairman and CEO?? They appointed him this year. They may be aware of some of their strategic mistakes and need to shake up their traditional thinking.
Cathy, greed is still good. Sony needs to be more visionary, and not let their management make tactical movements based on emotion.Carl
