HDMI Pass-thru question....

I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered - I couldn't find an answer in searching.
When you hook up a DVD player using HDMI to an A/V receiver (such as the Onkyo 507 or 607) and then to the TV, does the receiver have to be turned on for the signal to make it through to the TV?
The reason I ask: Once I get my HT system set up, I want the kids to be able to play DVDs without using the receiver. I know I can make additional hookups with component video/audio cables, but it would be cleaner to just have the HDMI cable as the sole connection. Will the signal pass-through with the receiver off?
Thanks!

Rocco is right, receiver is in control of the signal so if it is off the TV will receive no input and display nothing.HT Rig

not to many ways around it. Depending on the dvd player you may not even be able to run to separate cables.Man Cave: 7.1

Newer Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo recievers will pass the HDMI signal to the TV when the reciever is in standby (not off). You have to choose the input you want before putting the reciever into standby.
I know the Yamaha 665 and above, and Onkyo 607 and above will do it, not sure on which Denon models. -
What about some form of powered HDMI splitter (I've heard the non-powered ones are iffy) from the DVD player to TV & the receiver. Would need a spare TV input which might mean a remote control nightmare, etc. Might be more trouble than it's worth.Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p

Some good ideas...thanks.
My Sony has plenty of inputs, so I'm thinking I may try using the HDMI when I want to use the receiver, and when the kids just want to play one of their movies, have them use a component input and (in a sense) bi-wire the DVD player...
I'll probably wait until I actually get the receiver and then play around with it.
Thanks for the input.... -
You maybe able to use the component signal from the source directly to tv, when you wish to bypass the receiver.
