figured I've been playing for a year, so I should put some vids of me playing for all to ridicule
also, note the number of basses in the background, guess where my normal "audio funds" have been spent lately..LOL

The rest are on youtube under the username "Rotelfan2000"
been playing for a year now, love the heck out of playing.
the Black bass (the one I'm playing in the first vid posted, is one I built myself. Took an Alder body, pretty much added every component to it myself. neck and neck plate, Bridge, Pickups, Tuners, Strings, Active Preamp. AS luck would have it, it's my favorite bass I have played so far.Living Room 2 Channel -

Actually ..... that's pretty good, Ohskigod ! Kind of an Elvin-Bishop-slide-with-Robin-Trower-pump kind of thing going there .........
.... and that's a good thing.Sal Palooza -
Nice! Nothing like a good jam session Lou.

Sounds like you've come a long way for only playing a year. Most people I know that have been playing for a year aren't half that good. Were those just free jams?
I've been playing both acoustic and electric guitar for about 9 or so years now, and lately I've been getting the itch to get an electric bass rig. I've always loved playing bass...you can just groove to no end with them. After I get my 2 ch. rig setup to my (temporary) satisfaction, I'll probably be putting together a decent bass rig.
What kind of pickups did you use in the bass that you built? It sounded like the general EQ curve of some active EMG's...it's kinda hard to tell though. The nirvana inducer-

definitly free jams we came up with on the fly just to have fun.
Black Betty (thats what I named the project bass) has a set of Fender "noiseless" jazz bass pickups. the pickups are passive but there is an Audere active preamp installed. It gives me a wide array of sounds on tap. on the first vid, the midrange is on full because it sounded better recorded on the Imac mic, but its usually about 1/2 way only.
thank all for the words of encouragement, I wish I started playing long agoLiving Room 2 Channel -

Ah...I didn't see that you mentioned the active preamp previously. The Fender noiseless JB pickups are nice. One of the guys that I jam with fairly regularly has a Fender Jazz bass with the Noiseless pickups...played through a Gallien Krueger 4x10 cabinet with a 400 watt GK amp head driving it, it's a match made in heaven. I love it. It's got all the twang and drive you could ever want.

I have been itching to start playing again. I haven't played since I was in high school (gulp) 16 years ago. And now I actually have good taste in music!

I have to say, since taking up music again (I played the keyboard.....poorly.....in high school), it is not only fun to play in and of itself, it has helped me appreciate listening to music more as well.Living Room 2 Channel -

I used to be a bass player. Now I just pretty much own a bass.

Nice. GK makes some awesome equipment. That's probably what I'll end up going with whenever I set up a bass rig.
You inspired me to dig my bass out of the closet earlier. It's nothing special, I honestly don't even know what kind of bass it is. Something cheap...one of the pickups doesn't even work...lol I got it for 10 bucks at a garage sale like 6 years ago though, so I'm not complaining.
It actually sounds half decent through my Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier halfstack...I'm attributing that mainly to the amp though.;)The nirvana inducer-

Very well spoken.
It would still sound way better if I had a half decent bass and an actual bass amp though.;)
All of my electric guitars sound incredible through the Mesa/Boogie. I don't attribute that to the amp though.:);) Well...maybe partly...The nirvana inducer-

I've gotta ask. How do you like that GK 700RB-II? Musicians friend has a deal on that head with the 410RBX-II cab for 999.99. http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/GallienKrueger-700RBII410RBXII-Bass-Stack?sku=580296
You had to go and post these videos didn't you?:p I've been itching to get a bass lately...and now that itch has gotten a whole lot worse.
That GK half stack looks like a killer deal for a thousand bucks. It has excellent reviews. I'm looking for a Phil Lesh/Paul McCartney kinda growl with plenty of funk...and nice snappy high end. From the sounds of it...this amp might get me there. Any thoughts? The nirvana inducer-

you know it Lou, I am still digging my Fender Roscoe Beck 5-string, recently been doing alot of Floyd, especially, Time and Money, great bass lines.

Curt,
that GK is beefy as hell. great sound, and reserve power out the wazoo. hard to imagine needing more power without going through a PA at some venue anyway. I like the sound of it. downside? it's overkill for playing at home. it's why i got the Markbass (that and it was on sale for like half off!!). glad I got both though, I love knowing I got that GK ready to rock when needed
the RBX cab is a nice cab, it has it's lovers and haters. I suggest putting some ears on it at a Guitar Center near you, I believe the would price match musicians friend since it's owned by the same company anyway.Living Room 2 Channel -

Lou,
are you playing with other musicians? This is what gets me going!! Its cool to do a song and then work a bass line with an unexpected run and watch the guitar player jaw droop a bit. sorry if its in the video and I cant see it.
RT1 -
Good to know...I really like some of the features it has. The XLR DI output is a big plus, I really like the bi-amp feature that it has. The active EQ is nice too, I've never really been a fan of graphic or parametric EQ's. I think this might be what I end up going with when I set up a bass rig.
I'll probably end up getting a smaller practice amp as well when I get a bass. Like you said...that halfstack is overkill for practicing a lot of the time.
I'd definitely go and test one out before I buy though. With this kind of stuff you have to.The nirvana inducer-
