e2-300 vs svs pb10nsd/pb12nsd

i've been reading great things about the elemental designs a2-300, svs pb10nsd, and svs pb12nsd. my orginal budget was about 275. the a2-300 is goiing for 350 shipped while the svs are in the 400's/500's. i am willing to spend more so that I would be completely satisfied. how does the elemental compare to the 2 svs subs. 350 is something i can handle. room is 20x15x9ft high. who has these and how are they. thanks. are these subs too strong for my polk rm20 surround set or will it be fine with them

If you want to try the ED sub, you'd better order fast the price is going to $400 shipped anytime. From what I'm told the PB10 and ED sub are very close. I think the ED has a tad more output in it's midrange with the PB10 being a bit flatter and more musical. That's from Craigsub who scored them equally. The PB12NSD is quite a bit more sub. The A3-300 is it's competitor, but I know little about that model in comparison. All 3 subs can handle your room and do a great job. The PB12 will put the biggest smile on your face.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Now you're talkin'. I was able to get my A2-300 back when they shipped for $315. As the price has crept up closer to the SVS PB10 the SVS looks better and better for those looking for a new sub. As Ron has said there is supposed to be a price increase coming soon (May 15)on the eD, and as Ron said the SVS would have a slight edge over the eD, (mostly with music). Since your looking for something for almost exclusively HT over music I would jump on the eD and save the $70 + shipping. If the eD is going to cost you $400 I would go with the SVS as it would now be $30 + shipping more and would be worth it IMHO.

Glad to see you were able to up your budget. This is the price range and performance range I think you are looking for to be happy.

i am leaning toward the ed sub. more for home theater is what i want. so the ed and pb10 are pretty close. the ed seems better for ht than pb10 right? pb12 is way out of my price range. been looking at finances and am not sure if i can afford any of these right now (even at 350, really sux). how hard is it to find some of these subs used anywhere? anyone know good places to find these subs used if for a much better price?

I have to update my situation. Sorry if im blabbing, just need advice. My living room is actually a tad smaller at 17x15x9ft(ceilings). But my living is opened up to the kitchen. Does this play a factor because my seating spots are within that 17x15 ft space I mentioned. Also a big ouch, after talking with the wife, we can't afford to spend 350-400. If I get one which my wife doesn't even want, then I can not go over 200 bux. So, was looking in that range at some of the bic subs (bic h100, bic america f12, bic america v-1220, this one has higher rms i can find for around 160). Which out of these would be good for my room. I decided I am not wanting the best but am looking for one that is way better than my sony sawm40 sub. Can anyone chime in on this one, thanks

At that price you're not going to find much...maybe better off used. For about 239 you can get a White version of Boston Acoustics 12" 300 Watt RMS sub (shipped)--which is about as good as it can get 'new' at that price. There are better of course--like the SVSs mentioned above. And a lot of the above posters have given you the low down. But if you're going cheap it doesn't get much cheaper than this at onecall.com

Yes the eD and pb10 are close, I wouldn't say the eD is better for HT, just very close for HT and a little less $$ with the SVS being better for music.

Yes the updated room size and opening to the kitchen play a factor. Is the opening to the kitchen a doorway/hall, or a larger opening? An opening to another room is going to add to the room size you are trying to fill. But now you are about 500 cubic feet smaller than originally, which will help a little. Too bad you have to deal with the WAF (like many of us do), but there are other priorities than out toys:( This gets you back to a budget that IMHO will not yield a lot of improvement. Are you in the vicinity of any good size city? I would keep a close eye on CL or eBay for something used locally so you do not need to pay any shipping. If you can place the sub, maybe even your Sony near your seating location (beside/behind couch/chair) you may get results you can be happy with. I feel for ya, knowing what I want, but not getting an OK then needing to make a decision on staying with what I have, or spending money on something that really isn't going to do what I want drives me crazy. I just hate to see someone spend hard earned $$ on something, then 6 or 7 months later spending more trying to get closer to what they wanted originally. Sometimes it's better to just go without and wait until the funds are avail.

hey apphd you are the man when its come to this. kinda bummed but you know, when the time is right, i'll get one of the better ones. im actually in no hurry to get one. so im going to just wait and maybe ill get lucky and find one used somewhere in my city. im close to phoenix, az so well see. also, my living room is actually part of a larger room which has the kitchen and living room connected. so im guessing this will not help my situation. im gonna try moving the sub closer to where i sit and hey maybe it will help a lot. thanks for the help. now its a waiting game.

You must have me confused with someone else;) I'm just getting back into HT after some time away as I was happy with what I had, so I'm pretty new to what's out there now as well. I just try to offer what I can to CP as I have learned a lot here, and hope that others will; set me straight when I am wrong (usually no problem there :o), and others will offer different advice from a different perspective, as there is usually no 1 solution or viewpoint on most audio.

You already have one of the best things going for you in using patience. Take time to know what you want, and take the time searching used or saving until you can make it happen.

well I definitely cant afford one of the better subs anytime soon. i decided to just wait until a good deal comes up for one used locally. if it takes time it takes time. so to get by, i found a barely used bic v-1220 locally on craigslist and got it for 75 bux (it looks freaken brand new). after setting it up, it way better than what i had. so im happy until i can an svs sub. anyone have any info on this bic v-1220 sub?

A good budget sub is always better than an htib sub or none at all. Enjoy what you have.

I have it up front in a corner right now since its the best spot for not being in the way. gonna try to move it closer to seating area to see how it sounds but wife and kids are always here. so gotta wait till they go out to do that. also whats the best way to set up the speakers with this sub. little confused with crossover. how should speakers be set. i have a polk rm20 with onkyo 606 receiver. thanks

Set front, center and surrounds to small or with the Onk as soon as you select a xo it is then small. Cross them at 80Hz to start. Use the LFE in connection on the sub to by-pass the subs xo and use the Onks. You'll probably be good there, but don't be afraid to experiment and find what sounds best to you in your room.

For folks looking for an ultra-budget sub The Speaker Company has some rebadged Energy ASW-8 subs for $99/ea. I have two of these in my bedroom setup and they are great little performers. Don't expect miracles but within the physical restraints of a 8" sub they are excellent.
