Was a great TIME for Music. So many Good Groups and NO boy bands. The Music was an expression of the TIMES. Woodstock was a work of ART....it captured all that was good in that time period....(I missed it). Still watch the movie once a year.....So may of the greats are gone.
More of the greats:
Crosby Stills Nash & Young
The Bryds
The Who
The Band
Mountain
Judy Collins
Joni Mitchell
Emerson Lake and Palmer
Buffy St Marie
Janis Joplin
...and lets not forget the FIFTIES. They had a collection of lp's that was called "Crusin".
They had the best songs of each year with a picture of a CAR from that year on the cover. Still have most of the set. -
....anybody have this series...missing some and seem to be hard to find.
The Fifties were a great time to be a KID. That is ....if you weren't a woman or black.
The "war to end all wars" was over. Great BIG beautiful cars with lots of chrome.
"Bandstand" on after school from my brothers generation.
You could leave your doors unlocked and as kids you could roam free.
Eat breakfast and then off to explore the world (during the summer). No kidnapping...or child molesters ( at least no fear of).
Transistor Radios.....baseball...hula hoops...yo yo's.
Jukeboxes....Rock and Roll!!!! 45's
Magnavox console home stereo!!!!! -

Hello,
Good thread and since I'm 61 I qualify. While I was stationed in San Angelo, TX. going to tech school at "Goodbuddy" AFB (actually Goodfellow Air Force Base, but nobody called it that) my roommate and I bought a fairly good quality "record player" on time payments. It was made by RCA and had detachable speakers and the turntable dropped into position to play records. We'd go down to San Angelo and pay a few dollars each payday until we'd paid it off. Then we each had an equal share and take turns using it. My preferred way was to detach the speakers and put them on either side of my head, then pack in a couple of pillows so I wouldn't be too loud. He and I were the veterans of the barracks, we both were delayed in getting our security clearances so we were in limbo. He was assigned to the camp recreation area, a nice little park near the Concho River. Me, I was assigned to the combination bowling area and slot car track. My sergeant was near to getting out and was planning to become a pro bowler, so he practiced all day long. So, I had the run of the place and took care of everything and he left me alone.
Me and my buddy had one of the two "rooms" in the barracks, so we could play the stereo fairly late into the night and didn't have to get up too early. Eventually I got my clearance and started the second phase of the training while my buddy was turned down and given the permanent job at the rec center. He gave out basketballs, boat oars and life vests to officer's/NCO's kids and made sure the kids wore life vests. Real cherry job, no boss just sunshine and fresh air. He bought my share of the RCA and I always wondered what became of him.
I was a real musical lame-o, in 1967, I listened to America, Fifth Dimension (I think that was their name, the group with a young Kenny Rogers) and other things I heard on the radio. It wasn't until I got to my first duty station, on Okinawa, that I bought a component system and my first serious rock record, Janis Joplin and Big Brother. The rest has been, as they say, history.
