onkyo 607 2 subs vs 1
i just bought the onkyo 607( being shipped monday) can any1 advise what kinda subs i should buy. I was looking at the polk audio site on ebay , they have the 303's for like 100 dollars .I have nieghbours so i was thinking would these do? or would i be best to go for like a 404 or a 505 for 300. Whats the reason for 2 subs anyways? . i own polk rti4 rti6 fxi3 have i made the right decision buyin the onkyo as far as power goes and my cousin is gona give me his martin logan aerius when he gets his new summits , could the onkyo power these puppies for a 2 hour movie?

another question, i just read a bunch of posts regarding my rti6 and decided to buy 12 awg wire and connect the rti6 with spades then bi wire them with banana plugs, is monoprice a good place to buy?
-
should i use the 12 awg wire for all the speakers, or just for the rti6?. thanks in advance for not helping people
-
Using 12 gauge all around would be fine. You could get by with lower gauge on the surrounds but why not go for an entire roll of 12 gauge. The quality of the wire will also be important check out the pricing online at monoprice and bluejeans. It's not just the gauge though thicker is usually better.
As for the Logans. I'm not that familiar with the impedance on MLs but I think they might be 4 ohm speakers--someone correct me if I'm wrong. If that is the case you might have a bit of a problem in taxing the Onkyo with that load and would not reach the MLs potential.
Hopefully someone else will also chyme in?

I have the older version of that AVR, the 606. It DOES NOT like low impedance loads, and those ML's are 4 ohm speakers. It gets really hot simply running 8 ohm loads during movies...it would probably be kicking in the protection circuit running those ML's. The 607 isn't rated for 4 ohm loads, let alone electrostats. Those ML's are going to need lots of high current power, and the 607 won't be able to deliver it.
As far as the sub goes, I'd go for the 505. If you can't spring for two of them, just get one for now. Depending on your room size, and placement, two subs may not even be necessary.
12 awg will be fine, and Monoprice has some quality products at great prices.
Be aware of the fact that the 607 doesn't have pre-amp outputs, so you'll never be able to hook up an external amp to it. If it's not to late, you might want to consider canceling that order and springing for the 706.The nirvana inducer-

thanks for the input guys. i duno about canceling the order because i have read some great reviews from users and a pro on cnet. Well as long as it powers my polks i will be happy i guess, My wife wont let me go over the 450 mark for a receiver so thats why i bought the onkyo on ebay for 440

I'm sure you'll still be very happy with it. The 606/607 is a great AVR, with it's only real weak point(IMO) being the lack of pre-outs. It should serve you well.
If you stick around here for too long though, you'll be wanting to sell it off and get something with pre-outs so you can hook up some external amps.;)
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it. It's a great entry level AVR.The nirvana inducer-

i will let you know as soon as i get it budd, I'm sure its going to be a better system than my htib itl be repacing, i should do a comparison

It should smoke the hell out of your HTIB.;) I upgraded from a HTIB setup, and now I'm running an Onk' 606 with RTi8's and RTi6's, and the difference between this and my HTIB is night and day. There is no comparison. The nirvana inducer-

i never knew one could run speakers like the rti8 with the onkyo 6's
-
I wonder what is the point of 2 subs vs 1 ? . anyone have 2 subs running in a ht setup on movies? please let me know your opinions
-
I have run two subs and in my room its an improvement but placement is a bit tricky as well as sub matching. I had mine at opposite ends of the room at a diagonal but that won't work for every room. And as Curt says and I have to agree ONE may be enough. The subs can interfere with each other if you're not too sure about how to configure and place them?

The RTi's are pretty efficient speakers, the 8's in particular don't need a ton of power to sing. External amps will obviously really help to open them up, but it's not necessary.
Running my RTi8's in 2 channel, my ears run out of room before the speakers do.
If you were going to run the RTi10's or 12's, you'd probably be running out of steam with the 606, though it could still power them.I wonder what is the point of 2 subs vs 1 ? . anyone have 2 subs running in a ht setup on movies? please let me know your opinions
In larger rooms, sometimes you need multiple subs to help fill the dead zones in the room. It can also make the bass response more even from side to side.
Also, some people just like to have tons of bass. It isn't a necessity by any means. It really depends on room size and the placement of the subs within the room.
Some people run one sub in front and one in back to help even out the bass response across the room. Some people run one on each side in front to make it more even from side to side.
I'd just stick with one for now, and decide later whether you need another one or not. The majority of the time 1 sub will be plenty. The nirvana inducer-

if you decide to go with 2 subs you may have to put in a killer dvd like U571 or transformers...something like that and move the subs around until YOU are happy with the sound.Polk Audio Surround Bar 360

why transformers? and what chapters for testing?, i cant belive that deal on 6av for 379, i paid 450 for mine from highendwholesale on ebay and that included the shipping, dam i thought i got a super crazy bargin as well, i could have put the extra 70 towards a good sub too, I still dont know why they got 7.2 if its realy 7.1 split off? I was thinking the 2 subs would be for like a left and right configuration?.. I am soooooo pissed about the 379 price... please make me feel better and tell me that you gotta pay 80 dollars for shipping lol
-
hey i just checked the 6thave and ....yeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy they have it for 499 , now i feel good again
-
Those kinds of sales are a one day or a few hour thing at best. The lesson learned is 'never' buy something when it first comes out! Because you'll never get the deal you will a half-year later. I've always followed my own advice. I usually buy a year old on closeout. My entire system is probably 35% of the MSRP or less NEW!

ye i see what your saying, i bought a panasonic ptax200u ( $1300)from projector people and like 3 months later it came down to 1000 , but in wating for bargains i always think your missing out on all the fun , lifes short so live now

Buy the biggest, baddest sub you can afford, I would suggest you look at SVS models, and see if you can swing one of those. Definitely worth a look. As for speaker cable, www.bluejeanscables.com and go 10/12 awg with banana terminals.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

i was thinking about mono price because i will need 14 banana plugs , mono has a deal where you pay 199 when you buy more than 10 so thatl work out at 28 bucks, and there 50 foot cables for 12 awg is way cheap 2 , i am a cheapo lol . I actualy heard that the little cheap model subs from hsu are killer and cost effective, my rooms kinda like a shoe box and not very large, right now i am in an app complex so i dont want to offend the other residents, especialy with my mother inlaw being the manager

its just some dude on ebay polkie, but i'l bite the bullet on it and try not to think about the extra 70 dollars i missed out on, i have a new concern now about the heat problem ,Alot of helpfull chappys have recomended using a pc fan but i still dont know it thats gona cut it though with the new equipment rack i just bought, the marantz es7001 equipment rack on amazon
-
Hey Slowpolky.
Why don't you just get a fan? I think you're worrying too much. The Onkyo is a good unit for what you need to do and they're supposedly designed so as to be able to take that extra heat they put out. Mine is over a year and a half old..heat and all...No problems. Just check the marantz shelving when you get it...often such shelving is adjustable which means that you don't have to use the shelf above the Onkyo or could raise it very HIGH. Don't jump the gun. Wait till you get your unit and take some measurements of it in relation to the Onkyo!

your right bud, guess i can address my concerns in 24 hours when the rack and receiver get here, im not gona be able to sleep tonight as i feel like santa's commin lol, this will be my first awesome receiver , im excited to do some listening tests
-
I wouldn't worry about the heat to much.
Yes, the Onkyo's run hot, but they're supposed to, it's in their design. It's not as if they're overheating all the time.
I have my 606 in a semi-closed back cabinet with about 2 inches of air space above it. It get's pretty hot if I use it for extended periods, but I've never once had the protection circuitry kick in. There have been plenty of times where I've had mine running for 5 hours straight listening to music at high volumes. If it's not overheating during that, I wouldn't worry about it.;)
IIRC, you said you were mainly going to be using this for movies. I wouldn't worry about it overheating after a couple hours during a movie. Movies are typically less demanding of an AVR than music is.The nirvana inducer-
