Three Dog Night enjoyed tremendous success in the 70’s with numerous #1 hits.
Interesting who the composers are who wrote their hits
 Joy To The World and Never Been to Spain – Hoyt Axton.
 Out in the Country, An Old Fashioned Love Song and Family of Man– Paul Williams.
 Mama Told Me (Not to Come) – Randy Newman.
 One - Nilsson

They did pretty good with that strategy. Many, many artists have never written any of their own music.

Take Motown Records for example. The Temptations, Supremes, Jr. Walker, Martha and the Vandellas, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Isley Brothers and others recorded music written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. Check out this Link

Overall, they wrote 55 top 10 hits for Motown. Many people never heard of them.

PS Barry Gordy was a shrewd business man. Not always the artist's best friend, but very successful using his "hit factory"

    But the important question is:
Do you kind of like the music?

Read about the Motown "session" musicians sometime. Those guys played on more #1 hits than Elvis, and The Beatles combined probably. Probably got paid scale.
