Rotel 980BX - 300.00 shipping and paypal included. If local, will reduce of course. Original packing

7 of 10 - Due to age - Functions perfectly, and paired nicely with LSI's. Packed away for the last year and half looking for someplace to use it. This is a great entry amp into separates. First used with a Yamaha receiver that sucked trying to run Lsi's on its own.

Great paired with LSI9 through a receiver preouts. I think I just saw a pair go up for sale somewhere. :D

Great amp. I used this with LSi9's and was very happy. Great amp that seems like a conservative 130 watts.

Those Rotels are incredible. I owned the 980BX and the 990BX, and I still believe the 980BX was better then the RB1070 I have now.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Yes it is still for sale.

Bottom at the moment is 275.00 shipped in the US. Don't have patience for haggling with building in negotiating amounts. If I get tired of waiting, I may drop the price again here on club polk. Price will stay at this amount if i put on the gon.

nice site - thanks for sharing. On the topic of 980's, does anyone know if there's any setup to do on a Denon 3806 to run a 980 as an external amp from the pre-outs for the front speakers? Or, do I just plug in and play...amazing that the manual, denon's site, and many others don't give any details... And, I don't want to accidentally do something wrong and fry something!

I looked at the manual for the 3806 and on page 25 it shows the proper way to make connections to pre-outs. There doesn't appear to be any further configurability unless you plan on bi-amping and that is explained on page 72 of the manual.

Thanks for the answers...1 more question: can I run external amps on the front yet have the internal amps run on the other circuits (centers and surrounds)? I want to be able to have the best sound possible through the fronts and sub for critical listening (via the direct and/or pure direct settings), yet be instantly switchable back to surround via a button push for family movie viewing.

FYI, I am running a Denon DVD player through Denon Link to Denon 3806, with Paradigm Studio 100 fronts + Paradigm centers and surrounds on this system. I have Polks scattered around the house and powered by a Rotel 980 amp through a central system. My interest in JABRAX's 980 is that I am considering moving my current Rotel to the theater system & coming out the front pre-outs of the 3806's and possibly bridging each mono to power each Paradigm front.

Based on replies so far, I am going to try powering the fronts with my current 980 and see how that sounds. If I like it, a second could be in order...

(by bridging each, I mean the one I currently have + 1 other that I would need to accomplish this...so, as noted, I will try to see how 1 running stereo sounds. If it trumps the 3806's internal amps as I expect, 2 980's would be nice...)

Yes you can run the fronts through external and the other through the circuits on the receiver. That is how I used to run it. The reason for purchasing the 980 originally was to beef up the 2 channel sound for music through a yamaha rec.

Thanks! It's amazing how hard it is to find that info. I would think it would be in the Denon's manual or their website. I've had a question into their tech support about it, but still had not heard.

Out of curiousity, what did you end up replacing the 980 + Yamaha with & how did you like the 980/yamaha setup?

I liked the setup, but unfortunately I was stuck with a lemon yammie rx797 or something like that. I loved the features of the receiver, but the sub lfe preout wasn't working. After returning several times to get it fixed, I gave up on.

I used lsi9 speakers to start, and felt they were too flat with the yam, after reading about the speaks on this site, i decided to try and external amp. It made a world of difference.

I replaced the yammie rotel combo with a emotiva combo. I was planning to keep the rotel to drive speakers in another room (feature of the yammie), but have scratched those plans.

I've been looking at the Emotiva line now also given all the referencs to them that I'm reading from others in blogs. I really liked my Rotel's sound when I had it hooked up pure stereo with some B&W's (its role prior to what it's doing now). I felt the Rotel was strong, smooth, and had quite clear sound. Do you find the Emotiva similar to the Rotel or is the sound significantly different? Which Emotiva do you have?

I just had a major listening session using my Denon receiver as a pre-amp and either my old Rotel 980 or a pal's Adcom GFA-555 as the amp, varying speakers from B&W 202's to Paradigm Studio 100's to Dali's. The Rotel sounds every bit as great as it used to when I used it as my main amp in a basic stereo.

So, anyone wanting a nice jump from an AVR receiver to a far better sound should consider jabrax's 980. I am expecting my new Emotiva XPA-5 to arrive tomorrow! So, my Rotel goes back to power my central home stereo.
