I would invest in ammunition, nonperishable foods, and antibiotics with a long shelf life.

Let's not forget the simple things. In a holy **** situation simple basics like salt and ground coffee can be worth their weight in gold.

    Surprised no one's in gold?

Just ammo, can food, meds, coffee, and salt...

I must be thinking way ahead. ;)

Wizzy's got a good point above. I do have some gold not much...but that market is a bit fickle it's been mostly hovering high 800s/low 900s for a really long time. That means if you bought while it was still less than 400 you're, pardon my French, Golden. And if you've bought recently your MONEY is going nowhere FAST.

    Oh well.

A lot of talk about gold makes sense if you are buying real gold(can actually put your hands on it) since the thinking is paper currency may be worthless at some point in time but precious metals will always have value. Stocks based on gold(or silver, etc) are still currency based and will be as worthless as paper money.... if you are of the belief that our dollar is being trashed...which of course, it is!

You need a dealer you trust, unless you are going to become an expert in precious metal analysis. Then you need that dealer to give you a break on the market price, selling to you at somewhere between wholesale and market. There's lots of high quality gold coming into the US from Latin/South America and Russia, and most of it didn't get here the correct way. Coins are OK, just keep an eye on the purity and what you are paying for the value of the coin vs the gold.

And if we have a true SHTF scenario, you'll need lots of ammo to defend your gold or to get to it. Myself, I think at least 30,000 rounds of ammo is a minimum.

Not really, not when you have multiple firearms and love to shoot ....then thats " Damn , I am getting low " :D

Luckily, I saw the writing on the wall and bought enough reloading components for 50K rounds before the mad rush ...so I can keep shooting now while others are in panic mode paying as much as 4x for some components IF they can find them ( Primers...needed to go bang...are basically nonexistent in the open market right now...you can only find them on craigslist and auction sites for 70 to 80...even 100 dollars for 1K when they used to be 20 to 40 per 1K  )

As for Gold....its so damn pretty ( Heavy ) in physical form sitting in your hand ....my father got me into buying gold coins. He has a HUGE coin collection, but for some reason coins never did anything for me as a hobby...it was just the ones he had made out of gold that I liked.

They have some coins that are worth more for their coinage collector appeal then just their gold weight...as well as others that are basically just worth slightly over their weight in gold and really nothing more.

I would say for you Steve to just grab 1 or 2 ( Or whatever you are comfortable with spending ) of the bullion coins that are just a small premium over their gold weight value to start with...say a couple of 1oz Krugerrands.

Krugerrands is what I'm thinking about, but I know about American eagle coins also. Not sure if there is an advantage one over the other.

There are a lot of really nice gold coins out there right now, the Krugerrands would be good for a straight up gold purchase and not worry about what the actual coin entity is worth...its still 1oz gold :) The American Eagles/Buffalo's/etc would be better for their coin value ( Especially if purchased as proof sets ) .

I like em all for different reasons, I kick myself in the **** for selling a couple of 1oz canadian maple leafs a while back ( I only like 1oz coins unless they are part of a full set...then the smaller ones are ok ).

The American Buffalo's are really detailed and look fantastic close up....I just cracked open the vault and snapped a couple pictures....one of the golds closest friends wanted in on the picture too :D Funny thing...in todays market the friend is worth as much as the gold is

    As dkg999 said so well......
