I currently work for a grocery distributor, which is curious to the average person's response to this question:

Do you have any fear of eating pork in light of recent events?

There's yet to be any evidence you will get Swine Flu from touching or eating pork. It's a misconception that the CDC has corrected over and over again the past few days -- although I don't think anyone is listening. Just call it what it really is -- the H1/N1 and go about like normal. I'm BBQing today. :D

Why would I? I actually cook any pork products before eating them.

Mmmm, bacon. Hoping for prices to drop.

Why would you pose this question on the Polk forum? Do you think we're average? I'm offended.;)

Lol. I've posted this on a couple of forums. Modern technology certainly makes obtaining survey data much easier.

I'll being dining on swine for lunch. I forsee a couple of tacos de chorizo at the local taqueria in my immediate future.

I think Joe Biden said it's OK as long as you don't fly on airplanes or ride elevators with the pork.

The flu isn't transferred by contact unless you have an open wound somewhere susceptible to that contact with the meat.

The flu is, for the most part, transferred through the respiratory system.

Dead and refrigerated meat is not a hospitable environment for the flu virus of any kind.

On top of that, properly cooked meat is pretty much sterile if it has been handled properly. At that point, any flu virus left over is quite inactive and merely added protein.

The CDC, FDA and multiple medical journals have all said that there is nothing to worry about and advise that all meant should be properly cooked to avoid risk of infection from any organism, not just influenza.

    From the FDA:
    Cook It Right . . .
Color is not a sure indicator of whether food is safe to eat. The only way to know that meat, poultry, casseroles, and other foods are properly cooked all the way through is to use a clean food thermometer.

    Ground Beef
Oftentimes, when meat is "ground up" to make hamburger, bacteria that may have been present on the surface of the meat can end up inside the burger. When this happens, bacteria are less likely to be killed by cooking if the proper temperature is not achieved.

Cook ground beef to at least 160° F (71° C). Use a food thermometer to check. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention link eating undercooked, pink ground beef with a higher risk of illness. If a thermometer is not available, do not eat ground beef that is still pink inside.

    Meat and Poultry
Cook roasts and steaks to an internal temperature of at least 145° F (63° C). Poultry should be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165° F (74° C). Consumers may wish to cook poultry to a higher temperature for personal preference.

    Seafood
Cook fish until it's opaque and flakes easily with a fork.

    Eggs
Cook eggs until the yolks and whites are firm. Don't use recipes in which eggs remain raw or partially cooked, unless you use pasteurized eggs.

    Leftovers
Leftovers should be reheated to 165° F (74° C). Bring sauces, soups, and gravies to a boil.

If you cook meats to those temperatures, you will not have to worry.

Keep in mind that internal temperatures does not mean charcoal. For instance, beef, like a steak, cooked to 145 degrees internal temperature will be medium rare and quite pink in the center.

Other meats like lamb and goat are cooked similarly.

However, because of the various pathogens they carry, all poultry (including odd stuff like ostrich) and pork should be cooked well done and cooked through throughly.

People are easily frightened, aren't they. Pork, as has been pointed out many times above, is PERFECTLY safe...why destroy another American industry in a time of economic crisis? Those guys need to 'sell' their meat!

That would be good for another poll. I was mainly curious if anyone has reduced or eliminated pork from their diet due to swine influenza. I know many who won't go near pork. Hell, I only eat it if it's coated in BBQ sauce (with the exception being the greatest food ever, BACON!!!!!!!)
