Advice on New Speakers

This is my current set-up: Speakers and Receiver.

I'm thinking about upgrading the fronts and center with a pair of Monitor 50s and a CS1 from newegg, and using my existing sub and rear speakers for the time being. The TV room in my apartment is small, only about 14' x 11'.

A couple of questions.

1. How much of a difference in terms of sound quality could I expect if I went with the Monitor 60s instead? Will the CS1 match (the CS2 is too big for the shelf beneath my TV)?

2. Down the road, after I upgrade the sub, I'd like to get a receiver that can decode the lossless audio codecs found on Blu-ray discs. Will the Monitor 50s have enough detail for me to hear the added quality, or would I be better off just sticking with Dolby Digital?

    Welcome to Club Polk,

Here are a few ideas. Yes the M60s will match either center--you can also use the CS2 with the M50s--no problem. What is important to remember is that the center channel carries over 50 percent of soundtrack info on a standard DVD so it's VERY important. I have a CS2 and it's really the best option for this series.

If you have a good sub you might not notice too much of a difference between M50s and M60s! In 2 channel, without a sub you'll hear a bit more sound and lower end with the M60s. I run M70s and you definitely hear much more with those!

Are the M50s revealing enough for blu-ray soundtracks. YES! Though there are better Polk speakers, this is a top notch entry level Polk and it will give you decent highs and mids, it improves with the quality of the source and even amplification.

What you really need is a good SUB! Any 500 dollar+ Velodyne, Hsu, SVS or even a Polk new series (or PSW505) will bring a great improvement to your system.

New receiver, if you like Denon, consider a 2808/9, 988/9. They're a bit pricey but they have 'everything' you need and more than enough power to drive an Mseries speaker...(110-15W/channel). Pre-outs, Tru-HD bitstream decoding, HDMI 1.3 several ins/1 out, etc.

How much better is the CS2 than the CS1? In order to fit the CS2 I'd have to move all of my components onto a rack and place it next to an already long TV stand. Throw in the speakers and the sub and pretty much all of the 11 ft. wall my equipment is against will be filled.

The center channel is the most important speaker in a HT setup. The better the center channel, the more detail you will hear in the soundtrack.
