I'm less concerned about the ability of someone to make copies of a DVD and more concerned about studios ripping off customers multiple times as the make the journey from VHS to DVD to BluRay. I've bought Star Wars twice and will probably have to do so again to get it on BR and will likely have to drop the coin to get the LOTR experience on BluRay when that is released.

They just don't get it. I think every single one of these guys need to have a little talk with trent reznor. He made $1,600,000 in one week on an ostensibly free album. By fighting tooth and nail in cases like these, you just alienate your customers and find yourself far behind in the technology.

Why dont they just make better movies? lol

I'd buy more if they were better.

I have movies purchased on Beta, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and BluRay. The movie industry (and music) is in a losing battle until they wake up and realize they are out of step with what the consumer really wants. They don't seem to be able to stop the copying with technology so they are taking the lawyer approach. No surprise there but I doubt it will work.

The more they try to prevent it, the more everybody will do it. I'm going to start copying after reading this story. I'm not starting a business, just doing what I want with my own property.

I am not against ripping what you own. I think the prices are still to high for a lot of DVDs out here. The media they print them on cost next to nothing. Understood that they have to make some money, but they should make DVDs more affordable. If you have kids I understand backing up the their movies. Also ripping stuff to a HD is convenient for HTPC's, but the problem is there are many groups of friends that "share" too much. It would be nice to see some companies offer some sort of credit to upgrade to the newer media if you provide them with an authentic original.

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Sharing is the age old argument. There should be some common sense reasonable laws about this, but unfortunately there aren't at the moment. For some reason the media companies have been able to get laws in place that would be laughable in any other industry.

Lets say I own something that no one else in my neighborhood has, but they would all like the use of. So being a generous civic minded individual, I loan the use of my property to my neighbors at no charge. My neighbors are happy and I've made some new friends.

Now if that property is a lawn mower, no one cares. Really if I'm helping my neighbors get their grass cut, probably everyone in the community is happy about my sharing my property with my neighbors. The truth is if they like my mower, they will probably try to get one for themselves. However if that property is a Movie or Music, I risk the RIAA coming to my house.

Now the really funny thing about it all is they have it backwards. Not the lawyers, they know their paychecks depend on the cases. But the studios are losing sales as a recent study proved. If you get an mp3 from someone and like the music, you are more likely than the average person to buy a copy of said music.

The other real problem here is that they keep going after legitimate devices and software that actually protect their copyright.

That ripping software puts DRM on the rip so that it can't be copied to more than one or two computers. If they shut down that software, people will find ones that are harder to use, but don't do any DRM.

All I have to say is I'd like to see these guys just 'try' and sue CHINA! May as well just pour pudding into your pants and put on a dunce cap. The technical expertise over there and the 'piracy' is exponential.

I agree I see no problem with making copies or back-ups for personal use. And the fact is, we all know hackers can defeat ANY copy-protection scheme. So it's a LOSING battle for the industry, etc.

Lower the prices and we'll be fine! A lot of us also want to be able to load a film we have on a portable device like an ipod or a Zune, or equivalents--should we be prevented from doing this? Should we pay a TAX every time we play a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray, that 'we' own? There has to be a happy middle-ground somewhere.
