A faithful friend to the very end

A couple of weeks ago, I happened upon a photo on Yahoo of the statue dedicated to the loyal dog that waited at the train station for his master for 11 years. I also noticed that a Hollywood movie version has been made of this story, to be released later this year. Just in case you don't know the story, here's the story of Hachiko.

There are times I like dogs better than people....(at least some people)
From Shep's site listed above:Eulogy on the Dog
The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.
A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert he remains.
When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies; and when the last scene of all comes and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there, by his graveside, will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Cool stories. There really isn't a better pet then a dog.

I am glad this thread was created.
I have had my dog, Lucy, for over 12 years and she is 16 years old now.
My thoughts of her are very similar to those shared about Shep.
I got her from the pound where she was brought after being found unconscious and emaciated. After 6 months of puppy food, the dog warden brought her out to me and I looked into her eyes and knew she was my dog.
On this past Sunday however, at 5pm she had a seizure rendering her blind in her left eye and numb on the left side. She couldn't walk and kept falling over. I was at work, but my fiance was home and called me when it started. When I got home 30minutes later she was already feeling better.
She even seemed to regain most of what was lost by the morning.
But last night at midnight or so, another seizure, and the same results.
I held her head in my lap.
After she regained some of her senses, she walked around bumping into stuff.
Her vet committed suicide last November so I had a call into another vet, but I have a feeling I know what I have to do. She is the best dog ever and is so dedicated to making me happy.
I attached some of the pictures from the Lucy Calendar my fiance and I made last year. -
I remember my dog back when I was a kid...
Pure-bred Rotweiler male, my dad got him from the pound and named him Goliath (dads name was David). He ended up earning his name, he weighed a good 200+ lbs and was all muscle. He loved kids, and used to sleep(smother) with me sometimes.
I came home from school one day and found him laying in the backyard...I'm not ashamed to say I cried for a while.
I still miss him, and I hope to get another Rot at some point in my life."Dr Dunn admitted that his research could also be interpreted as evidence that women are shallower than men. He said: "Let's face it - there's evidence to support it."Best Buy is for people who don't know any better. Magnolia is for people who don't know any better and have more money to spend.
