What's Your Favorite Radio Station?

I hadn't been listening to much radio here around the Albany, NY area because most of the radio had slowly morphed into bland Clear Channel dominated content. Today I fired up the tuner and sent it into seek mode. Discovered this small 60s-80s rock station out of Hudson, NY. 93.5 WZCR.

I've been listening to it straight 6 hours so far and have not heard a song repeat. Few commercials too. It's earned a place in the presets.

Any other great stations still left out there?

None. Radio sucks. Has sucked for almost 20 years. At some point
all the *holes from AM radio and their marketing spilled over into FM.
Big check DJ's, loud compressed ads, short playlists took over.
Time for grassroots. There are still some areas of the country that
never got bought up by the CLearchannel clones. Once in a while
I hear one driving around the country.

In Pittsburgh, mine are all NPR stations. Jazz WDUQ (college station Duquesne University), WQED (classical, one of the finest in the country) WYEP (alternative). All three stations have no commercials. Especially those obnoxious automobile commercials or soliciations for **** enlargers and get rich quick deals. Oh, don't forget the promos for the monster truck pull!

WSGE 91.7FM. Local college station. That's how I find artist that don't have that "They look pretty and super-cool and we'll make them sound good in post-pro, call the A and R man, we've got the flavor of the month!" look. I.E. musicians. Lots of local bands, indies blues etc. You know? The good stuff.
They stream on the net. Check it out.

Then again, I live near Philly. You can't go more than 3 frequencies down the dial without hitting a radio station.

There's a station at every spot on the dial in Dallas. Mexican, talk, Mexican,
talk, urban, Mexican, talk. Rock died except for the forementioned clearchannel crap .
Smooth jazz is gone, and the public radio classical station doesn't have the
    wattage to pop popcorn.

    Boulder, CO 97.3 KBCO

These two stations still play the other songs on the album. KINK works hard to promote new artists.

Just plug in your zip code and this site will list all the stations and what they play in your area.

By the way WGBH, 89.9, in Boston plays the best live and classical music with very very little compression.

A college station of "fame" in the Albany area is WRPI. I suspect that those engineering students there have the transmitter a wee bit modified too, as it gets out suspicously far for a college station ;) Cool stuff, but they are all over the board (depends on which student is manning the station and which semester it is). One time this student (had to be a single person) would play acopello material every evening. Not bad in and of itself, but the stuff played was really bad Japanese sounding material that sounded like cats mating. It went on for a couple of years.

Jazz is gone in the Albany area. The last holdout station that broadcasted from Rutland, Vt decided to chance a market share increase by going to religous content. The sole public radio classical station at the low end of the dial is still holding on.

In the ATL area...88.5 WRAS Georgia State College radio.
While you sometimes have to put up with listening to College DJ's monkeying around on the air, they are the best music station I have heard in either the Atlanta or Chicago areas.

I stopped by this thread to post the EXACT same station. Creepy. Anyway... it's my understanding that the station has the longest signal range in the country. I even believe that was a question on Jeopardy a couple of months back.

edit: highest power of any college radio station in the country

I haven't listened to Kiss for many years but that station compressed the music quiet a bit If I remember correctly.

I was the station to listen in the car because it was always loud.

Let it be noted that I ONLY listen to college radio if I'm not destroying my CD's. Anything right on the dial is garbage.
