I have a question--Polk used the 6500 in the Monitor series prior to '83 and the 6600 in the RTA 12s prior to '84 Starting in about '84 or '85 they went with the one-fits-all 6501.
Why did they do this and what is the difference between these three?

Try running that by Polk CS. They could probably help you on the technical side.

Perfecting/contouring the sound to fit the desired result.

Each driver has different parameters, which may be slight or large depending on the results that Polk was after.
