I know there are a few happy NetBook owners here, so you might be interested in another Linux OS option.
Jane Silber, COO, Canonical, says: “The latest feature enhancements in Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix are particularly well suited to the requirements of netbook fans. Faster boot speeds, enhanced power-management features and easier switching between networks delivers the best netbook end-user experience available for download today.”

Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix is out today -
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook

Some of these ultra-mobile PC's have been selling with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, but Ubuntu 9.04 is now your latest version.

We tried Ubuntu on a Dell mini and found there were some needed windows based applications that just would not work with it and ended up with XP.

Supposedly 9.04 Netbook Remix was fully tested and "Tier 1 approved" for Dell Mini 9, Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee 1000 and 900a, and Lenovo S10 - read here.

Wondering what you found ... I find OpenOffice and Thunderbird takes care of most big things for me - e-mail and office apps. I could see a big hole if you are using say Outlook tied to a Exchange server.

There is QuickBooks, but my home/office and full size notebook takes care of that.

Didn't see a mention of bluetooth ... necessary for me for Internet Access over Verizon cellular.

I'm guessing it works okay, would be nice to confirm.

My Dell mini has XP........Ubuntu just doesn't cut it. These little Netbooks are so inexpensive paying a bit more for Windows is worth it.

Just becasue it "approved" doesn't mean it will do what I need. I need it for use with a version of Adobe Photoshop...and it is not compatable.

I wasn't very impressed with Ubuntu when I tried it on the Dell mini. Like everything else, it is really all about opinions and I just don't care for it.

    Yup ....

I carry a mini with me in the glovebox, but also keep a full size notebook in the trunk. Mini is great for the quick e-mail, need to do something, don't want to cary 10lbs on my back.

But for some things it doesn't cut it, regardless of what OS is on it.

Have you tried GIMP? If it is not an option, you can always run Photoshop using WINE. I don't imagine you're doing any heavy picture processing with a netbook anyways. :)

I'm familiar with gimp but I do all my processing with PS CS4. I use the mini to download from my CF card onto a WD passport when I'm out away from home to free up card space and as a backup. I have had a CF card corrupt before I was able to download the photos at home. They can be recovered, but it is a PITA. I want to use the same format to download as I do for PP. Not a lot of processing, but I will do a small amount of PP from time to time on the mini...but that is not the norm.

Plus...I didn't really like Ubuntu. That made my choice easy.

All I can say is my mini runs an XP version. It's been OK. But Ubuntu has saved my a$$ a number of times when XP has crashed on my main laptop.

Shack, Does that little Intel Atom CPU really seem to have enough guts for Photoshop work?

edit: nevermind, shack. You've just answered it, and I got distracted when I started typing my question.

edit#2: ^^ what cnh said ^^ Ubuntu has never been my 1st choice for an OS, but it is so nice to know there's a free easy option to recover my PC when Windows does it's thing from time to time...

That's understandable but a totally different reason than in your original post. Photoshop works in Ubuntu so the real reason was your personal taste, not needed software... ;)

Thanks for the link. Quick question though - what footprint do I need for Ubuntu? I only have a 4 gig drive in my netbook....
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

The version I had did not support photoshop.

Which version did you have, or how long ago was this? Did you install WINE? It isn't a straight install, you do have to do a little work to get it working (but it does work).

    Here's Ubuntu running CS4:

You probably can't do this with a netbook (found this as a related link, looks pretty cool, one of the best Compiz demos I have seen):

8.04 last summer. At the time I was running CS2 and have now upgraded to CS4. It simply would not load.

Why would I want to go to all the trouble to install wine and f**k with it to get something to run when a simple install of windows XP took care of my issues?

You got the one from Sellout (obviously) - I haven't even received my shipping notification yet.... :(

I did get a 2 gig memory upgrade, but just have the 4gig drive in mine. If needed, I plan to get a 32gig drop in....

i didnt receive my shipping notification either...but here they were on my door step when I got home. Theyre based out of texas and i live out of texas, so I'm sure yours will come soon.

I like it so far...so cute! haha. Its pretty small, but pretty much what I was looking for...wish it wouldve had a 10gb hard drive though.

You know you can upgrade the flash drive right? (to a faster drive as well as larger)

    It is about $55 for a 16gig drive, $86 for a 32 gig drive or $149 for a 64gig drive.

If I end up with an upgrade, I plan to get the 32gig drive as that seems to be the current sweet spot for a fast drive with a decent $\gig ratio...

Both work in 8.04 w/ WINE.

That's not the point (and it's not much of a trouble either). Neither is that CS4 costs almost the same as the netbook while GIMP is free and does about the same thing. Here's your quote:

Simply pointing out that is incorrect at least for Photoshop. That's all.

I stand by everything I said...regardless of your wanting to "set me straight". I don't know what you motivation is...maybe you are a ubuntu "fan" and can't imagine anyone else wouldn't like it. Go argue your points with someone else. Bye.

I can understand why someone wouldn't like it, it's not for everyone. Do you always get this touchy when someone points out you were not correct? It's not something one would expect you to know, especially since you need to run it with WINE. I don't see anything wrong in posting that it actually works, especially since there was no disrespect shown (nor intended) towards you, Windows or Photoshop. The wink on my second post was there for a reason, to try to make sure the comment would not have been taken as such.

Yes - it is an actual hard drive replacement (you would have to reinstall - and unless you have a bootable thumb drive - you would want to get a USB cd player).

On the good side - you would have the room to install a full copy of XP pro if you wanted. (With the hardware overhead of Vista - I really could not recommend that even though you would have the room. You could give Windows 7 a shot if you wanted though)

Right now the plan for me is to run Linux on mine. If that does not work out though - I will give Windows 7 a try and if that fails as well - off to good ol' XP.

As a side note these will NOT fit the Dell Mini 9. The Dell Mini 9 SS HD is about 1/4-1/2" shorter. Those wanting to upgrade the Solid State drive in the Dell Mini 9 need to go here:

    http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=800008DE-1224564428

I have a Mini 9 and I love it. 8gb HD and 1g of ram. I use it to wander around the house, deck and occasionally to a friends house. Mostly for internet, e-mail, wi-fi and light computing.

Don't forget you can get an 8g or 16g SDHC card that can act as a drive also. It's a tad slower but still completely useful unless you are doing some powerful computing.

    FWIW

    H9

P.s. the Mini 9 drive is 50mm, the other popular brands use a 70mm SSHD.
