Worth Upgrading to Monitor 5?

I was given a pair of Monitor 4.6 for free about a year ago. I have been impressed greatly by their sound but feel they need a little bass

about six months ago I found a PSW 50 subwoofer and used this to increase the bass responce however the lack of stereo imaging was a little dissapointing.

I was wandering if it would be worth Upgrading to Monitor 5 for about 50$ since is has the 8" passive radiator for better bass responce?

Thanks for the help!

Don't waste you time and money with the sub woofer and Monitor 5's. Not that they are bad but you can and should do better. Depending on where you live you could find a pair of SDA2 a/b's for $200.

To answer your question about the 5's having better bass response, they sure should. Don't forget that speaker placement can help with bass response.

The speakers are for a small study, about 140 square feet. Therfore I thinks the SDA's would be a little large. My current Monitors fill the room very well. They just lack a little in the bass end. I am hoping the monitor 5's which seem the be identical except for the passive radiator will give me little more.

I have own a pair of the monitor 5's and 7's. You should try to find some 7's, they are only a little larger cabinet, but much better bass. You could probably find them around the same price.

The Monitor 7's have plenty of bass. They can be had for roughly the same price as the 5's too. I've got a pair of 7A's and they put out enough bass to get my whole house shaking.

Well lets put this on a scale

    If the 4's are a 1 and the 10's are a 10 what would the 5's and 7's be?

Sencondly for 100$ would it be worth the upgrade for the 5's?

Haven't heard the 4s or 4.6s, but I'd give $100 in heartbeat to upgrade my older series 5jrs for a clean set of 5s....with Peerless. Just my opinion....and I don't know what $100 means to you.

No, not quite. It's actually a 15 room Victorian with a full attic and basement. Not my house...my parents...lol

My stereo is up on the second floor, and I can feel the bass from it in the basement. That's with a simple little Onkyo 606 AVR driving it...I can't wait to get some separates behind it.

I've never compared them myself, but a lot of people actually prefer the 7's over the 10's. I've read many reports of the 10's having a smeared sounding midrange due to the side by side MW's. They have better bass output though of course.

I'd love to compare a pair of 10's to my 7's sometime.

    Hey Curt
You could fit a dog house in the attic!
Just **** with you, you know that. I think the 10's will out perform the 7's all day.
I have been meaning to start a thread on the 7 vs 10 because some of the things I've read don't make sense.

In two places that I have come apon the Monitor5B is says that the 8 inch driver is a passive subwoofer and not a passive radiator

    Is this true?

Hmm...I could fit a dog house in the attic. Thanks for the idea!! I've got a project for the weekend.

I'd be interested in reading that thread if you decide to make it. I've been itching to try some 10's, just to compare them to my 7's. A lot of people seem to think the 7's are better, but there seem to be just as many people that think the 10's are better.

You'll also see "fluid-coupled subwoofer" sometimes.

They all mean the same thing, in that it's a passive driver, which is driven by the air being pushed off of the back of the mid-woofer.
