I'm not a dark beer fan by any means... Usually the darkest I'll go is a Lager. But I splurged on a Sam Adams sampler case, and my favorite out of all of them is this Honey Porter. I was unsure at first, but it's really grown on me!

The Scotch Ale isn't bad, either... I just have to let it warm up a bit before it tastes its best.
Ludicrous gibs!

Haven't tried the Honey Porter. But the Belgian Wheat in a cool tall glass is a meal in and of itself. No orange slice needed.

Not a big dark guy meself but if you like those you wouldn't be a beer drinker if you haven't had a Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale. Crisp, Smooth with a Nutty finish. (Not that kind ) I've only seen them in 4 pack's around here for $ 8-9 but well worth it.

And on a side note NewCastle is always great off tap in a Cold Pint Glass..........

    errrrr

    Gotta go clean up

    Cheers

I will have to say the the Sam Adams and Sammy Smiths are both great beers for brown. Goose Island Hex Nut Brown Ale is also a good brown. I'm not a huge brown beer fan this time of year, the beer I recommend for everyone to try right now is Bells Oberon. It's fantastic!!

I'm a big fan of hefeweizens (wheat beer) and am currently trying out Sam Adams Hefeweizen. Two thumbs down. :( Their Cherry Wheat (actually a Belgin wheat since fruit is present) is not shabby to me. Camps seem to be polarized on it. Either you will hate it or love it. I will be on the road tomorrow and able to grab a 6 pack of Haken Schpore (misspelled) where I frequently go. A steller German wheat. :D

This is not the porters or ambers mentioned so far in this thread, but a great domestic stout is Adirondack Brewery's Black and Tan. $7/six pack in upstate New York - a steal for the quality beer you get. A great English amber is John Courage. It used to just be occasionally available on tap. The store I stock up on Haken Schpore has started carrying it for $10/6 pack.

Rouge Stout. Room temp. It's not a stout made for guzzlin' down, but a nice pint to have long discussions over until the euphoria sets in.....

In Germany it's called Hacken-Pschorr, they make a great pilsner as well.

Can't go wrong with anything that Rogue makes in my mind. Dead Guy Ale or Double Dead Guy Ale are great if you like flavor.

OOof! I've tried the Dead Guy Ale, But Double Dead Guy? More towards a Bitters or just heavy on the ABV without the start and finish?

    Help me here..Rogue "chocolate" Stout?

That's the thing about truely good beer. It will taste as good, if not better, at room temperature, as it does chilled. I discovered that when I used to homebrew. A really good stout at room temperature can be better when at room temperature. Subtle flavors release that are locked up when it's cooled.

Maybe time to go crack a warm Black and Tan to wash away the nasty Sam Adams Hefeweizen after taste that will not go away. (finished it a half hour ago...).

Talk about a nasty aftertaste. French brewed Stella-Artois off the tap in a short glass. Clorox won't kill the taste.

You haven't tried beer until you have had a nut brown ale by Sammy S..

I think Paulaner has one of the best Hefeweizen. Stay away from the Pyramid and Shiner as they do not even come close to the real thing.
If these were the first someone would try, they would most likely steer people away from ever trying a Hefeweizen again.

If you like Porters (it was George Washington's favorite), then Fuller's London Porter is a well structured and balanced one with full flavor that is not over the top.

And +1 for the Samuel S. Nut Brown....mmmmmmm.....

Started my beer drinking days in England where pubs served beer at room temp. Actually took a little getting used to a chilled beer after that! Hardly ever touch the stuff in the winter(that's my brandy season) but a nice tall glass goes down well while watching the grass grow from our deck!
Yep, my name really is Bob.

Fuller is good. Very good! The same +1 for Samuel S. I forgot to endorse it earlier. If you like either, you will find John Courage to be as pleasing (if you can find it).

Interesting observation. I like good beer and have spent time in England and Germany sampling (not the reason I went to either country, but since there, what the hey). Germany has the deserved reputation for its good beer. I think England has better beer and more variety too. Most of the brands mentioned so far in this thread are English beers that are top fermented. :)
