Yamaha AVR setup

Gang,
I the system shown in my .sig.
The first time I ran the auto setup for my receiver, it set my front and center speakers to large. I since went into the manual setup and changed them to small.
I thought I had read here that one could manually set the speaker size, then re-run the auto setup and that it would keep the speaker size, but when I tried it tonight, it changed my front and center speakers back to large
Did I misunderstand? Is there no way to set the speaker size and then run the calibration?
What exactly does the speaker size affect, anyway? Just where bass frequencies are routed? Or does it affect how much power is delivered to the speakers?
I don't know if the size setting has any bearing on it, but it seems like the rear effects speakers are barely audible most of the time that they're actually being used in various soundtracks. I have them mounted fairly high (about 7' to the bottom of the speakers). They're immediately parallel to our couch, so I set them to dipole as recommended in the instructions.
Thanks for any advice on the AVR setup or the speakers

I have a Yamaha as well - so what you need to do is after you manually set your speakers to small, go back into auto setup, but select "SKIP" for the SIZE option. If you leave it as "CHECK", ypao will reset your speakers to "Large".

Ahh, I don't recall seeing any skip options. I'll have to look more closely next time. Thanks!LG 47LG70 LCD TV

If you go into setup, there are several options for distance, level, size, etc.
All will say "Check" as the default. Simply toggle the selection to "Skip" and you're good to go.
Good luck!

Koo. Will have to re-do it the next time I get a chance to do it when it's quiet. With a dog, cat, bird, and noisy neighbors, it's not easy ;-)
When I ran YPAO yesterday, it did discover that I had reversed the polarity of my center speaker when I had re-done some wiring to clean it up back there. That was a good catch. I don't know if the calibration necessarily needs to be re-done after fixing the polarity, but I want to re-do it anyway with the speaker size set correctly, so he wiring will all be squared up next time.LG 47LG70 LCD TV

YPAO often says there is a polarity issue when there is not. So, double check it. I replaced a speaker wire on one speaker, and made sure it was attached correctly and YPAO said it had reversed polarity. Then I ran it again, and it didn't catch it. 3rd time, it says reversed polarity again. I think it's just sensitive to any differences in the wire.

Wow, good to know, dcornutt. In my case it was actually correct, but I'll definitely keep that in mind should it pop up again when I re-run it!LG 47LG70 LCD TV

I finally got around to trying this again today. On the auto setup screen that comes up when I plug in the microphone, I didn't see any option in the available menus for check or skip. Where exactly are they hiding?
The screen has "EXTRA SP ASSIGN," "SETUP," "EQ," and "START" options. The SETUP menu has 4 options: Auto, Reload, Undo, and Default. Nothing in there that allows toggling certain aspects off.
Thanks for your patienceLG 47LG70 LCD TV

I found that in the little screen on the receiver not everything will show in the menu, but on the TV it will. Just a thought.

I'm using the TV. I actually didn't even know the receiver showed some of the same info until tonight (and I've dinked around with this thing at least a half dozen times now)LG 47LG70 LCD TV

I have the Yamaha RX-V1800.
What you are describing for your V663 is quite different.
But, ultimately, you want to find the corresponding functions on your avr so that you can:
* manually adjust all of your speaker sizes to be Small (Front, Center, Surrounds)
* re-run auto calibration, but before you do, find out where you can "skip" the check for speaker size.
If your avr can not "skip" the speaker size check during auto calibration, then it sounds like what you first did is your only solution - to run auto cal, THEN set speakers to small.
Sorry I can't be of more help....sometimes you just have to break down and read the dang manual

I'm surprised I haven't received an RTFM before now ;-)
I have done my best with the manual. It's not well-written (or well-translated) and even has some pretty egregious errors (like about a half dozen mis-numbered items on the pages illustrating the various items in the front panel display). I'm going through it again, but I'm not optimistic.
Another example of something I've been looking for in the manual is how to "turn off" the mysterious Amp button on the remote after having used it. If I manually change settings, it requires first pressing the amp button. That's all fine and dandy, but after I'm done, the amp button continues to light every time I press any other button (like the volume controls) for quite a long time afterward (hours, perhaps? I haven't checked carefully). Eventually it stops lighting when other buttons are pushed. It's a minor thing, to just turn off whatever it is that the amp button does, but the bigger issue for me is that I've yet to find a nice concise explanation of that button's function anywhere in the manual. It only appears as a "step 1" in a few places like the manual setup, where it just says to press it first. I may have just overlooked it, but it's little things like that, and not finding this skip feature, that are giving me more gray hairLG 47LG70 LCD TV

BTW, how does the small vs large setting affect the calibration or the way the amp works? Does it increase power output to the speakers if they're set to large? What would changing them to small *after* running the auto-calibration do? Would the settings even be appropriate, if they were done under the assumption of large speakers? I don't know how this thing works except that it tries to equalize volume (and maybe time delays?) at the listening position.LG 47LG70 LCD TV

I only run the manual setup for calculating distances/ levels. I set the fronts to small and manually adjust everything else.

I meant i only run the automatic setup
