I received notice yesterday that my COBRA premiums will be subsidised by the government for up to 9 months. The subsidy is 65% of the premium. I was laid off in December by a car dealer (I work in service). I was hired by another in February expecting be eligible for benefits by May. Well, my new job told me last week they were discontinuing all benefits to all employees because of the slow economy so I began shopping for private insurance (its not cheap as we all know).
A new Federal law, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), provides COBRA premium assistance if you qualify.
Check it out. You may be able to recoup some of the huge amount of cash we've all been giving through taxes for this "recovery" effort for something useful like health insurance.
