Monitor 5 Question

I probably don't need to ask but just for sanity check...

I'm looking at buying a pair of Monitor 5's with peerless tweets. They are apparently fully functional and appear to be in good condition. They come with stands (appear to be original Polk stands) for $100.

Anything I should look for?
Sound like a good deal?

thanks
Stan

Listen to them 1st. Make sure the mid drivers move, not locked up. Make sure the rubber surrounds are not torn. Good Luck.

I have picked up 2 pairs of monitor 5 over the last few months and paid $60.00 on average without stands. The condition of the speakers were 7-8/10 with everything working. If they are in great shape and come with the stands I would offer lower than $100.00 and see if they go for the lower price. If they are like one pair I picked up (5a), make sure the fuses are not soldered in unless you want them that way. Other than that, good luck.:D

Hey Skrol, are those the ones on Balt. Craigslist. They look pretty nice, the stands look rather discolored though.

Yes they are. I got additional photos and they look pretty good. I wonder if the stands are original Polk though.

always offer a less than asking price when you check them out, but it looks to be a decent deal with the peerless tweets in them. the peerless alone are worth atleast $30 each. good luck
Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -

I think I'll see if I can take a look and listen and make an offer. I've been waiting to find some 5's for my basement and these should do well.

I also wonder about the verticals on the stands. The style seems to look like the original Polks though.

    BigMac, thanks for the link.

I haven't looked at them yet but I did find out that the stands are home made based on the original Polk stands.

I have a pair of 5JRs that are set up as my center spreakers for my AV system. They are great speakers.

I picked up the Monitor 5A's today.:) The drivers and cabinets are in excellent condition. One grill has a small tear. The gentleman bought them new in 1983. His audiophile son used them for a while. He felt that the original stands were not quite tall enough, so he modified them doing a pretty good job. These speakers have been loved.

I now understand why folks like the Peerless tweeters.
