Favorite Rap Album

What is your favorite rap album/song/artist, whatever?

I realize that this thread is likely to be pretty unpopular with this crowd. Oh well.

I would have to say that Dr Dre's The Chronic is probably my favorite rap album of all time. I can't say I really have a favorite song.

Are there any fans of Blackalicious, Del, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5 out there? They are less well known names, but undeservedly so.

Let's see...which one of my vast collection of rap is my favorite? Wait...I don't own any rap albums so I guess I don't have a favorite.

And it isn't because I haven't heard it. With 2 teenage daughters I hear too much (and to be honest they don't like rap very much either).

Man, I knew this thread would get some trashing, but the first reply?! That is more than I expected. :)

    RunDMC - King Of Rock.

Call me old school, but that album about sums it up, a real back-to-basics lesson in rap. The blueprint, by which all others must (and have) follow, if you will.

As far as new(er) stuff, I'm diggin' Nelly, 50 Cent, Luda, Nore, Eminem, The big neptizle -with the Snoop-e-d-o double jizzle, some Pastor Troy, Missy Elliot, Trick Daddy, and Jay-Z.

    Cheers,

RunDMC has to be one of my favorites (of course, anything before around 1990 or so when record labels decided to hyper compress all of their CDs sounds good to me) I like Eminem too, and that Khia song "My neck, My back" gave me a few good laughs. Nelly used to be cool, but now he turned into a preppie flamer. Going thru my 550 or so mp3s and countless cds i can find some trick daddy, 2pac, Afroman, Dr Dre, Big Tymers, DMX, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Nappy Roots, Outkast, Snoop Dogg (but he got **** recently like nelly [star romance here?] :) ", and that's just what i pulled out of my ****, I know there's alot more. My MP3 folder is 2.2 gigs now, I guess I should do something about it.

I don't think its fair to compare Snoop to Nelly. Snoop is a much more establised rapper than Nelly. Nelly is bad. Snoop is talented. Snoop is schooled in rap. Snoop is part of the select few that have shaped and redirected rap. Maybe when Nelly, or anyone else as lame as him, has been around for 10+ years, but I doubt that will happen.

MTV: The First 1000 Years: Hip Hop

I also have one of those dirty little secret favorites: Craig Mack: Project Funk Da World. I don't know why I like it so much, I just do.

As far as rap goes, I don't own too many albums. It's just not my thing I guess.

Not into rap at all but that cd kicked ****. "Forget about Dre" is a great song.

Dre 2001 was incredible. At first I was fearing that the album would do the original injustice. But no, it was incredible itself.

That new 50 cent album is one of the most overrated albums EVER IMO. If he didn't have dre and eminem behind him he'd still be selling albums out of his trunk in NYC.

The Chronic is timeless. I dig some J5, Blackalicious, Talib Kweli, Latyrx, Gang Starr, anything produced by The Neptunes and Missy/Timbaland, Saul Williams, The Roots, Outkast, Digable Planets, Black Sheep, Mos Def. I could go on and on. I don't really have a favorite. For the most part I like anything with a nice beat that doesnt' talk about **** n hoes and how much bling bling and guns they have.

    Anything not on MTV.

Atmosphere, Sage, Living Legends, Copywrite, El- P, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Aceyalone, Grand Buffet, and a bunch more. I used to listen to Del and Souls of Mischief but I don't like their more recent stuff.

Gotta be the easiest way to sum up what I like. I can't stand when a song is on the radio and everybody loves it so much so they play it again, and again, and again, and again, and again... it gets so old and played out. Then there are artists who don't do it for the music, they do it just to get on MTV. So they look at what's been popular lately and make a friggin clone of it. Then their album gets on MTV and the cycle starts again. What you get is stupid beats and mindless lyrics about **** ho's and bling bling and **** mo' ho's

I'm surprised no one mentioned Busta Rhymes or Cypress Hill. I'm not that big on Rap, but it kicks **** in the car with the subs pumpin.

I'd have to agree with Dr. Dre, Snoop, DMX. Beastie Boys rule.

I was just thinking about Busta, and that I totally forgot about him. He is very deserved of this list. Ahh, this is why I was thinking about him. I was thinking about the post that stated that so many rappers just try to spit out whatever will get them on MTV, and its total crap. Then I remembered that I really like Busta, the one of the few rappers that make to to MTV quite often and are awesome. Bustas CD's are great the whole way through. I am sure my favorite Busta songs are ones that never made it to the radio.

Shizelbs, have you heard the Busta Rhymes version of Iron Man? I think it's on one of the Nativity in Black tribute albums. If not you should check it out, it's pretty cool.

Arrested Development "3 years, 5 months,.." - probably is rap for those that otherwise can't appreciate rap, but I like it.
C+C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat" gets a spin every once in a while as well.
Beastie Boys and others used to live here, but no more. Never minded them though.

    BTW,

The Beastie Boys Video Anthology DVD is a must have for Beastie fans. It's pretty exhaustive. 18 videos all in DD 2.0 and DD 5.1, a whole wack of remixes, band commentary, director commentary, a whole wack of mutiple camera angles and more. You can spend hours just switching between remixes and camera angles.

    Really well done.

Thank god someone finally mentioned kool keith. Dr. Octogon blew my mind when I first heard it. Still my fave. And also anything in the rhymesayers collective out of minneapolis is good. These people are genuine artists and not industry whores like the acts (and I mean acts in more ways than one...) that most people are exposed to. I would hope that people who say that they hate all rap look below the surface and at least be aware of the very original and creative groups that don't get national exposure because they don't be rollin' in they bentley poppin' cristal and rollin' 'round in the sheets with 16 year olds poppin' cherries (R Kelly...) like all the mainstream rappers do in their retarded videos (though R kelly didn't intend on THAT video ever being shown, hehe)

I forgot what my point was...

After really thinking about it since this thread first started, I have concluded that The Chronic from 1991, or whenever, has to be the best rap album ever. Its still great. It was so ahead of itself. It was revolutionary. Feel free to disagree, but thats how I feel.
