a while back I purchased the Greatest Hits from 1970-2002. am I the only fan? I think old Elton has done a great job entertaining us for a long time.

Elton John is awesome. He is like the Beach Boys or the Beatles. You may not listen to him everyday, or even think you are a fan, but whenever you hear him, you realize that he is just that great.

I'm a big fan of his early stuff. I got that CD as a Christmas present and it is quite good. Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are all excellent albums. Nothing he has done in the last 25 years has interested me very much.

I was going to pick it up but realized I already had many of his hits on other cd's. Plus it didn't have all of his hits.

I ended picking up a collection from his early 80's for under $10 !!

It had "Hey. Hey. Johnny" which is a tribute to Lennon. Awesome track. Makes you think what ever happened to great song writing these days?? You know-a melody you can sing along to as well?

Yep. Those were the days - when artists in the 70's,80's and mid 90's came out with some great stuff.

If you're saying he's into little boys then you're wrong. ****- yes but that's another topic.

If you're saying his "average singing" has had the same success as Michael J. then you're correct.

What happened since '95 or so? All we've gotten since then is "Girl, baby, I love you, girl won't you be mine? Girl, baby, I love you forever!" which eventually gave way to "My neck, my back, lick my **** and my crack. First you gotta put you' neck in to it, don't stop just do it, do it. When will the torture stop? The only reason this happens is because pop artists discovered that they got more money when they made exact copies of what was on the radio instead of being creative and changing the pop music scene. We're stuck in a rut here and unless somebody creates an entirely new sound that becomes popular we will be stuck with what we got for years to come. Kinda sad how music, one of the basic things that separates humans from animals has become so commercialized that artists are afraid to be creative because they might get 10% less in sales when they allready have 3 mansions and 30 vehicles.

I don't think you can compare Elton with Michael Jackson. MJ is just a freak of of nature. Yeah he had some good stuff in the past. Everyone had a copy of Thriller.

Elton on the other hand has been around making hits longer than MJ. While Elton as a person has some quirks of his own (not because he is ****) of course. He is a much better singer, muscian, entertainer, and songwriter. What would Elton have become had he not met Bernie Taupin?

I like EJ for his lyrics. Some of the best ever written. One time when John Lennon met Elton John he bent down and kissed his feet. Yeah a funny gesture on the part of John Lennon. But John sure could recogonize talent. Elton has that talent.

Who out there doesn't have a favorite ELton song? What happens to you when Bennie and the Jets comes on the radio? What about Crockodile Rock or the **** is Back? Great stuff.

I could go on and on about EJ, but it's not necessary. i think I made my point.

Elton is one of my personal favorites H. Saw him in Tucson in 74 after Yellow Brick Road came out. I think every pop music collection should include Madman and Tumbleweed, my two favorites. Another I started listening to again this last couple of years is the Captain Fantastic album. This album was sort of autobiographical for Elton and Bernie and there is some interesting metaphor going on in the lyrics. Honky Chateau is also worthy. He has recorded a lot since then with some great moments, but as far as entire albums are concerned, for me anyway, his early albums are his best.

Elton John, in my opinion, peaked between 1972 & 1978. Once he and Bernie Taupin stopped writing together, his material changed.

I have been a fan since 1971 and own most of his recorded work, including bootlegs, and the Elton John/Bernie Taupin work is to the 70's what Lennon & McCartney were to the 60's.

As a showman, very few were as flamboyant as Elton in the 70's. As a writer, he can hold his own with the best of them. As a musician/vocalist, he is above average. When his career began, he never intended to be a singer because he didn't like his voice.

Elton today, although still a showman, cannot compete with his former self. Age, and a flamboyant life style, may have something to do with it. I recently had the pleasure of working the Billy Joel/Elton John concert at Continental Airlines Arena and Billy was much more energetic and a much better pianist than Elton.

Elton may have mellowed in recent years, but he is still one of the top drawing entertainers of our generation.

This really can be said about any musician who has been around for more than 20 yrs. They usually peak in their 20's and 30, then have very little success after that. Take and musician or group from the 60's or 70's or even 80's that are still making music now.. and you will find that their best stuff is behind them. Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, The Eagles, etc.

the SACD's of his are some of the best IMHO and still cheap. get them while you can

Agreed. Check out Live in Australia w/Sydney orchestra. You won't be disappointed in the recording.

Yeah following their temporary split, EJ didn't realize the degree of success prior.

Either way thank you for paying credit to the other half of EJ's success. W/out Bernie's lyrics I doubt we'd heard of Reg Dwight (EJ) I'm a big fan too. I have all their (EJ/BT) work* before the split on vinyl & CD. I have one* or Two on vinyl after they got back together. I even have one BT album on vinyl I think called "Tribes."

Lennon & McCartney didn't release 2 albums, one a double LP, in the same year both* of which went Platinum plus!

This is a fantastic album, and very unknown. It is an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

As do I.. I never had any EJ prior to SACD but I am glad I did. Small investment with a large payback so to speak.
Larry do you have yellow brick road on DVD-A also? I have both and find that the DVD-A actually sounds better for some reason.

EJ's last 2 studio albums (Peachtree Road and The Captain & The Kid) were very good, but still not on par with his 70's material, even though they were written with Bernie Taupin as the lyricist.
