I HATE MP3'S! I effing hate them. I knew better, but listened anyway. About half way through some Pink Floyd at a reasonable volume, one of my SL2500 puked. This is REALLY starting to get expensive, does ANYONE have any ideas to help avoid this problem in the future?:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Turn it down, ditch the source.

I need clean power also(I'm trying to kill an old Sansui-it just won't die). I knew the source was the problem BEFORE I STARTED!! Anyone who says MP3's sound good needs to be shot.

    Polyswitch? Anyone?.......
Granted I'm no expert, but I find it unlikely that mp3s are why your tweets crapped out. Turn it down or get cleaner power. If mp3s were the cause, then there would be countless blown speakers going around. Also, there are different types or formats of mp3s. Some do indeed sound like ****, but others can be made bearable. The polyswitch on you crossover may be your problem, in which case, polk will send you more. Just trying to help:D

Rip sound files to lossless/flac/wav, get a good DAC, and get some clean power.

I believe the replacement tweeter is the RD0-198, which is my favorite for vintage Polks.

Why would you credit mp3's for killing one of your OLD speakers? It seem much more reasonable to assume that the old speaker simply malfunctioned due to age of components within. And probably from playing your receiver way too loud.

I listen to my mp3 player through my system all day long with no ill effects on my 19 year old speakers. But I also know that sooner or later time will take its toll on these beloved speakers of mine. At which time I will replace them.

I apologize for my ill behavior earlier polks. I was rather upset when I posted this. My M12's have the original cross-overs in them, there is no poly switch. And I DO need cleaner power(and RDO's apparently with a cross-over update). The thing that pissed me off was that it wasn't loud at all(which is why I'm attributing it to the source), maybe 25% gain on the receiver. I had a pair of M10's that I gave to my father that died in the same manner on an Onkyo M-501 that I went through(mostly power supply udgrades-bridge, caps, ect.). They ALWAYS puke on me at LOW volume. Again, I apologize for my ill behavior.

I see no need to apologize:) We have all been at the point when equipment fails and we get REALLY frustrated and pissed off. I'm sure that has happened to most everyone on here at some point. Sometimes it just makes us feel better if we can blame something.:D

I hadn't heard of any problems with mp3's killing speakers until a few days ago. I guess that they could if the bit rate is low. Sorry to hear about your speakers. Go with the RDO's in both speakers. You will not regret it.

Most Polk SDA's with a decent source can sustain incredible db levels, perhaps to 110-115, but just a hint of distortion, even at 90 db can pop a tweet. "jr" needs to clean up his source if he wants to run with the big dogs!

You asked - "This is REALLY starting to get expensive, does ANYONE have any ideas to help avoid this problem in the future?"

and you got answers. granted, they may not be what you want to hear... but you did get answers to your original question.

You also state - "I'm trying to kill an old Sansui-it just won't die"

I'm guessing the above is the root of your problems. Respect your speakers, and they'll respect your wallet.

Use a Fusetron FNM 8/10A 250 V dual element motor fuse and holder. The filaments melt at 60w continuous.
We used these "back in the day" to protect OLAs (old Large Advent) whose tweeters were prone to blow at high sound levels when the amp was driven into clipping.
Won't save them all though. We would Rock & Roll those large Advents in relative safety!
