I own several polk speakers and recomended to a friend of mine to buy a set of monitor 10's way back when in 1990. Well he trashed them in the mid nineties and wants to fix them now. I need to replace one MW6503 driver and both SL2000 tweeters. Should I try finding used components or go with new ones from the factory? I see that the SL 2000's have been replaced by RD0194-1 which apparently is not an exact fit in the original hole according to what I read on other posts and don't want to butcher the cabinet. One of the SL2000's is still good but I figure if they're not available new anymore that I should replace both unless I can get a used one somewhere. Anybody have experience with this situation?

    Welcome to Club Polk
If the tweeters are SL-2000's the RDO's should drop right in. If they are Peerless tweets they are not drop in's. There is a pair of mint condition Peerless tweets for sale here in out For Sale section. If you can use the RDO's order them from Polk for about $100 pair just remember to tell them you are a member here.
Picture always help to determine which tweeter you have.

If the cabinets are in good shape and the price is close to free, I would get them. Remember when negotiating - the tweeters are about $48 each (be sure to tell polk you are a club Polk member for a slight discount and free shipping - I think the $48 is shipped club polk price) Anyway - the tweeters are a good upgrade and well worth it. They should be a drop in replacement. (They are not for the Sl1000 tweeter that you do not have)

The midwoofer is another $50 or so unless you can pick up one from someone here on the forum.

Bascally the speaker itself is well worth upgrading, the difficulty in the recommendation is that you can usually pick them up in decent shape for $100-$150 pretty easily. You are looking at having to put that into them even if you get them for free.

I think the sound is worth it compared to spending $150 on a new speaker, but the look is definately old school so that may kill the deal for some people. One other thing you might consider is can you find another intact set for under $100? you could then use it (or your friends) for spare parts....

The RDO upgrade is well worth it though so you may want to do the tweeter upgrade nomatter what you get - just keep the cost in mind when negotiating.

    Good Luck,

    Michael

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll buy the new replacements for these monitor 10's from Polk.
I'm up here in Canada so I'm not sure if they will include free shipping but my friend will have to soak up the cost if he wants these puppies repaired. Do you know if Polk sells the little knobs that hold the grills to the cabinet? I guess my buddy also had a go at breaking those too. Right now he's got velcro in place to hold them on.
