Someone I think Face.......posted a link to a Tube website which was a tutorial of sorts. I've looked and I can't find the thread the link was in. Does someone remember?

It was probably a couple weeks ago.......I meant to bookmark it and forgot now I need some tube schooling.

TIA

Oh, wow! I must have missed this the first go-'round. Thanks for asking again Heiney.

A Taste of Tubes is a handy primer indeed.
Once you've moved beyond "just a taste", you're ready to mainline!

Great resources online courtesy of Pete Millett:

There's primer-level stuff on Pete's site, too. Check out:

You might, eventually, look at Pete's main site, too... fun stuff to build!

Thanks for all the info.............now I need a link to explain the differences and substituions of certain types of tubes.

I am so confused simply because I've never really learned all the different designation of tubes.

So if I have 6N1 (ECC85) how do I know waht other tubes will work. I already know Russian tubes 6N1P will work.............but what else. Is there a tutorial for that somewhere as far as what works and what effect each will have?

    Thanks again

It gets a little tricky. you can buy a tube substitution handbook, but "not all substitutes will work in all circuits".

Here's an online database which has information on pretty much any tube out there (including Russian types that were 'off limits' in the West during the Cold War). You'll find some sub info, but it's always "substitute at risk" and know the potential consequences of a bad decision may be costly!
    http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/tubesearch.php (the Tube Datasheet Locator)

For example, the 6N1P (or, in Cyrillic, 6Н1П) is a dual triode; it's like a 6922, but the filament current is different (higher in the 6N1P IIRC). You can use a 6922 in place of a 6N1P in a Decware Zen SE-84 amp, for example, but you might overload the filament winding in a power transformer if you substituted 6N1Ps for 6922s in an amp (preamp) designed for the latter.

You can always ask at places like the Tube forums at audioasylum (or here).

    EDIT:
Good FAQs on tubes at: http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/d.mpl?audio/faq.html
    (check "Joe's Tube Lore")
Another decent source of bits of info on similar tubes is available if you dig around the Triode Electronics site:

    I hear ya Ted ;).

Just got one of those HCT (Fatman iPod; Dared MP-5) tube hybrid integrated's to play around with in the office rig and I'm already wanting to do some very basic tube rolling if possible.

Just trying to get my learn on
