Hi All,

I just bought Tsi 400 floor standing speaker and drive with old Pioneer receiver D 205 (5.1 channel with 100 watts/channel). Sound look not so great as show room testing . Is it due to my old receiver or speaker wire ( I used normal speaker wire ) or my setting on receiver?

I just tried on 2 channel only and I also noticed that Tsi 400 is poor in bass.

Buying the new receiver or amp will help both sound quality and bass system.

Thank in advance.

Rgds,

Power for the 400's probably isn't your issue their operating range is from 20-200W. Now granted if you are only pushing 75W or so to them (which is probably a more realistic output, since most receivers are usually "overrated" anyway) then they aren't going to aound as good as if you were pushing a full 200W of clean power to them. A receiver upgrade probably wouldn't make that much of a difference, but some difference yes. Also adding a sub will def. help your case too, since the 400's by themselves aren't going to shake the pictures off the wall. I have Monitor 70's, which are pretty much the same thing as the TSi 500's and they aren't bad with bass by themselves, but again not something that is going to shake the pictures off the walls. Probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade your speaker wire either, IMO it is one of the easiest/cheapest ways to get better sound from your setup. Also, I'm not too familiar with your receiver, but does it have pre-outs for adding an external amp? If it does, next best option would be to get an external amp to power your 400's and with a descent sub you will have a pretty good setup. If it doesn't have pre-outs then a receiver upgrade would be in your future if the sub didn't help you in your search for better sound. All depends on your budget too, but I would start with a sub and see if that made you happier. Also are you just running the 2 400's, or do you have a center, and surrounds too? Hope we can help you out, and welcome to Club Polk.

I have a pair of M70s as well, but also purchased a pair of TSI-300s, the model down from yours. Usually, most people will add a SUB for those towers because they really only get down to around 50hz if you're lucky. The base is very tight though. As W23 says above, a power amp may give you a bit more base. I've run the 300s on a regular Denon 110w/channel receiver and on a 200 X 2 power amp. The power amp does improve the bass PUNCH but it's still no Velodyne sub.

The best way to improve that base would be to get a good SUB...Do you like the mids and the highs on the 400s because if you do and you can hook a sub to that Pioneer. That's what I would do for now. Later you might want to upgrade your receiver. That depends on taste and you budget?

    Hi All

Thank for your reply. I would try with subwoofer to taste the bass. BTW, 5.1 channel sound quality is better than 2 channel? I am thinking of buying center and surround. Pls advice to me.

    That again,

Depends on your budget. Your best system with the TSI-400s as fronts would be to get the CS20 for your center, and TSI-200s as surrounds for a 5.1 as well as a good sub. The Polk PSW505 can be had for a pretty low price and would be good with that system if you want to save some money...see www.onecall.com

It also depends on application, meaning what are you going to use it for? Music? Movies? If you say movies then yes, 5.1 is better than 2 channel because you will have a better all around sound utelizing all 5 speakers, rather than just two fronts. +1 on cnh's recommendation for what to use for your center and surrounds.

if the pioneer receiver is kinda old and not driving your speakers very well i would suggest bi-wring them, if your receiver is capable of doing so. I have a a set of polk audio monitor 70's and i bi wired them on my yamaha HTR-5760 and they sound better than normal wiring. If that doesn't help then i would get a new receiver or and buy an amp to go with it.

I've seen people recommend a CS20 before. I just have wondered why? I have a CS10 combined with my 400's. ( I got a good deal on the CS10 and it's what started me down the road to get the 400's to be honest.) However I've wondered about this recommendation since, the CS20 has the larger drivers like the TSi500 speakers. So it would seem that the CS10 with the smaller drivers would match better. I don't know that's why I ask, I took a 20 year hiatus away from being an audiophile to raise a kid, so my knowledge is all dated.

If you already have a CS10 don't worry about it. The only reason most people recommend the bigger driver CS center as well as the CSi center is that over half of all surround track information is processed by the center channel, so for home theater that's the most important channel, followed by your L/R fronts and sub. Hence the advice to get the biggest baddest center you can afford.

That said the CS10 is a fine match for the 400s...no problem there.

For you the SUB will be an important consideration.

After you get the sub, be sure to set the speaker settings on your receiver to Small. This will enhance the mids and highs on the 400's and send the bass to the sub. Made a big difference for music with my Monitor 60's and PSW 125.
