Help with TV selection

Forum,
I would appreciate a little assistance in finding a good performing flat screen TV for my mother-in-law. She has an older Sony and is wanting to upgrade. her budget is around $800.00/1,000.00 and a maximum diameter of 40/42". She uses her VCR quite a bit as well as DVDs rented from Netflix. She has digital cable, but not HD and probably won't go to Blu-ray or HD cable. Any suggestion would be very helpful.
Cheers, Jed

If she's not going to do HD immediately and doesn't mind 720p you could consider a Panasonic Model: TC-P42X1 Plasma 42". Plasmas do a good job on SDTV as well IMO, a bit less pixelly than LCDs. Should be able to come in on the LOW end of your price range with this set...Another factor here is how much LIGHT she has coming into the TV room. Because while having more natural contrasts and colors plasmas are not as BRIGHT as LCDs.
Anyone else got ideas.Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

Hello Guys,
Thanks for the two suggestions, this is great information. She does have a large picture window directly behind her when she watches. So the room's light is coming over her shoulder when he watches. She likes a fairly bright picture, also.

Go with an LCD.
We have a 37" Sharp LCD in our bedroom and it does a fantastic job. -

Hello,
I've written all of your suggestions down and will let her know. She's an opera enthusiast and teaches piano, she has enjoyed her NAD receiver and Polk speakers for many years. She appreciates good quality!

I think in the 40-42" Range, Plasmas are the way to go.. Cheaper, and better picture.

I agree with MrNightly above.
But one factor here is all the 'light' that must be flooding in from those windows you mention. In that case, an LCD might be in order, though I prefer plasmas and think they are the best choice.
I got my son one of the 6 series Samsung LCDs last year (actually he bought it, I advised on the purchase...he runs an XBOX, but there was a great deal on a Samsung/PS3 bundle and I suggested that for an extra 150 as a bundle deal...you get a blu-ray you can also use as a server/gaming, etc. machine. So he bought that). Samsung does LCD WELL! And you can view it even with the SUN blaring in. If that is an issue. Consider the Samsung? If not go Plasma (definitely my next set!).

For a bright room, SD DVD, VHS and TV I suggest a Samsung 720P LCD. I have the h53 model and it has a great picture on SD content. Wife sews in the BR and requires bright light and the LCD has no problem making a nice SD picture in a very bright room.Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)
