So I have a pair of polk audio momo mmc5250 in the doors of my car I am looking at this amp to power them. The amp says it does 170watts rms. The speakers say 100 watts continous. If I got this amp, would it be too much power or, are the specs on the amp just exaggerated? If it is too much power, what companies are fairly reliable when it comes to rms ratings?

If you are conservative with the gains you'll be fine. My front speakers are rated for 100 watts RMS, I had over 200 going to them for a while when I bridged my 4 ch amp. Having extra headroom available is a nice thing.

The reason why I ask this is because right now I am driving these speakers with an amp that says it puts out 100watts x2 channels at 4 ohms, but the amp cost me 45 dollars so I pretty sure that thats ****

It's not a "high end" company, but should put out close to those numbers.

Haha well I think I am going to upgrade to a more respected company to get some more power and sound quality. I will likely use that crap amp for a subwoofer or something

are you going to bi-amp the momo's or are you going with front and rears off the amp?

Bi-amping is a means to an end, it is not an end by itself. I would recommend bi-amping the momos once you have everything in place incl a good sub, a good hu, maybe a sound processor/eq. To make a good setup the greater part of your budget should go towards speakers and hu. Any amp that puts out clean rated watts is fine. Once you have everything in place, bi-amping would give you the flexibility to tune each driver and your setup would allow you to use this flexibility to build a nice sound stage........

Till then you can run the front and rears of the amp and that would be fine.

What is the HU that you are currently using?

The head unit is an older pioneer I believe.

In anyone's opinion, would you think that the power rating of a sony xplode would be more or less accurate than a profile baja's power rating (both 100 X 2 at 4 ohms).? I have both of these amps thats why I ask.

Unless you are planning buy amps, what you have is what you have. I dont know anything about profile, but sony xplod equipment in general is at a basic level.

I would suggest before you 'install', A/B the two amps to see which sounds better. Try to keep the gain and xover settings on the two amps consistent, when you A/B. The amp that sounds cleaner would win. The amp that sounds cleaner and louder would win hands down :)

Kenwood amps I've had (SEVERAL) pretty much did exactly what they claim. They are some of the best car amps I've ever owned, run cool & reliably into low-R loads.
