Here's my (off the top of my head) list of recommended CDs for listening on your Polks:

St. Germain - Tourist (nice blend of jazz, hip hop, funk, dance... highly recommended)

Any Enigma CD (very avid collector)

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children (one of the Rolling Stones top 10(20?) most phychadelic CDs... very good nonetheless)

Sade - Lovers Rock

Delerium - Poem, Semantic Spaces, or Karma (Enigma like, Kristy Thirsk vocals are AWESOME on Karma)

Notice I don't have any Floyd or anything, even those are awesome recordings, I believe in listening to music that I enjoy and these CDs were recorded with great skill, they don't mess around. You might want to check out some of Aphex Twin's Ambient Works collections also, they are very relaxing and smooth.

Viva la electronica! :)

    Steve,

The mentions of Pink Floyd, and other well-known bands that most of us like or are at least familiar with, have already been made.

More music, different music, LOTS of music, is good. What's the point of a forum like this if we listened only to a few monster albums from past eras now being strip-mined for "classic rock" radio formats.

This week I'm listening to more blues (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prof. Longhair stuff, some stuff i'm finding on local college radio, etc) and right now a folk-rock band that I like a lot, called the Nields.

The Nields especially are an interesting band to listen to; the singers are two sisters (Katrina Nields is the lead singer on most songs, her sister Nerissa writes the songs.) They sing in complex harmonies, really amazing voice work, and are also often fun and silly, and also often serious and deep. Not every track is a golden treasure, but I think they're definitely worth a listen

Unfortunately, there is a select few (not on this board that I've noticed) that only believe in the few albums that are considered "classic", and unfortunately, they have some of the biggest mouths ;)

Mmmm, lots of music, that's what I am talking about. I've also been into this "female vocalist" fetish lately. Sade, Si-Se, Sarah McCan'tSpellHerName, and some others. Maybe it's the lack of a girlfriend, I dunno ;)

Anyway, I'd like to hear some of the other current favs of the readers around here.

    hi again...

Well, as far as female singer-songwriters go, a few days ago I borrowed three Loreena McKinnett discs from a friend. The three albums are The Mask and the Mirror, The Book of Secrets, and The Visit.

IMHO, she's _good_. Lovely voice, great music backing her, I even like her lyrics.

But right now I'm listening to a local rockabilly show on radio. I can't figure out why they play get-up-and-go music only late at night on Sundays... but I love the stuff anyway, and so I stay up late and listen...

Oops... if you're looking for Loreena's music, she spells her name Loreena McKennitt, not as I misspelled it in my last post.

Unfortunately, most of my stuff isn't, but one band that most probably haven't head of is the Pat McGee Band. They are kinda in the DMB mold, but with better songs IMHO. Their live album, General Admission has some killer bass guitar stuff. Ever heard the Popeye theme on bass? Very cool.

Another band that I like a lot (actually they're my favorite) that most people have given up on is Pearl Jam. Yeah, I know the usual arguments, but have you actually listened to the albumns after Versus? Didn't think so. Very good rock that is fun to listen to and different. Every album they have made so far has a different sound from all the others. Yield and Binaural are very clean recordings, especially the drums. Also, Eddie Vedder is playing the guitar these days, so their sound is even fuller. Enough of my PJ rant, but seriously, give them a second chance.

Yea, Radiohead is good stuff, I am partial to their new stuff because of my electronica background, but OK Computer is nice also.

You guys also might want to check out anything by William Orbit. My personal recommendation is Strange Cargo III, which has Water From A Vine Leaf which is just an awesome song!

Sarah Mclachlan. :-) Amazing voice. Surfacing is a great album. Must be something in the Canadian water. They seem to produce divas on an assembly line.

    Also check out

Jewel, Immogen Heap, cassandra wilson, anita baker.....

I've got to call dibs on whatever No3pencil is selling. If it's worth reviving and 8 year old thread it's got to be good:p

Edit: Sorry Ben. Just noticed you called dibs on another recently revived thread.

Nikka Costa. Pebble to a Pearl. Raw, Nasty sounds like two four track overlays. But Damn! Sounds great when she's singin'!
