Discovering new music

I'm 56 and have always been into music, but I'm often surprised at stuff I've missed. Just when I think there is nothing more out there that I'd like, something pops up. A few things over the past year have been,
1) REM - there was always a few songs I heard that I liked, and some I thought sucked. I really didn't think I liked this band, but for some reason I started listening to some of their older stuff, and cuts you never heard on the radio, bought a CD or two, and ended up with 9 CD's.
2) Foo Fighters - Never was a Nirvana fan. Never thought I'd like this. But I ran across a YouTube vid of Learning to Fly and ended up with 3 CD's
3) Captain Beyond - Considering this was from my 'era' I can't believe I never heard them. Actually, I must have and just forgot. Just bought their 3 studio recordings. Found them on Amazon looking for something else. You know they have those 'people that bought this were also interested in this' thing? I'm like, who the hell is Captain Beyond?, listened to a few samples and logged onto Ebay to find them all.
4) Al Stewart - had a couple Top 40 hits and I'm like ...eh, pretty pop-ish and not really what I'm into. But something got my interest recently and I listened to some samples and bought a Greatest Hits and a Live recording. Pretty cool actually. Alan Parsons was involved, and an English acoustic guitarist I like, Peter White.
5) And the latest? ....... Nick Drake. I just got into playing the acoustic guitar after several years on electrics. Someone posted on one of the guitar forums with a link to a YouTube vid of 'Road'. Did some searches, listened to a few samples, logged onto Ebay and ended up with the Fruit Tree boxed set, all within 30 minutes of reading the original post on the forum.

Does this stuff happen to anyone else?

I just got that Lykke Li cd as well. I'm always trying to find new music to. It's not that hard for me considering how many different genres I listen to. Here are couple more suggestions based on my recent finds:
    Kudu
    Santogold
    Metric
    Soho Dolls(awesome)
Yeah I've been on a "stuff with a beat" kick lately, but here's some jazz type stuff to:
    Esperanza Spalding
    Melody Gardot
    Happy Listening!:)
    Sony 40" LCD
    Sony DVPCX995V
    Sony PS3(games/media server)
    Sony PS2
    WD TV Live with 3TB
    Sanyo VCR
    Marantz SR6003
    Polk 11T(xover/RDO)
    RM20 5 pack
    OWM 5
    DUAL Micro Pro 1000
    Combastard Cable
    Harmony One
When rapture comes, can I have your car?

I've been finding more and more music that I am liking that I never listened to before, or that I heard before but it never did anything for me. I think now that I have much better gear than I used to, it just sounds so much better and make the biggest difference (yes even poorly recorded/mastered stuff).

For example-I never really listened to classical-it just always sounded so flat and jumbled together, but now its a different story. Same with Jazz and WWII era, big band, etc. I'm still trying to find the genres within genres that I really like though.
Even some of today's pop stuff that I didn't care for in the car, etc, I actually really enjoy at home in my HT or 2 Ch rigs.

My audio journey continues (at an increasingly expensive rate)....I'll have to check out some of your new discoveries there Dragon.

I am almost the same age as dragon1952.... I don't necessarily expand into new genres of music, ie: I am not now, never have been and never will be a fan of jazz as a genre. Same goes for Rap. What I do is dig deeper into the types of music I enjoy, which covers a fairly wide spectrum. I pick up a lot of old LP and CDs for a few bucks. There are always variants within a certain genre that will take you in a direction you never anticipated. That is typically how I find "new" music.

As I said in a different thread, I would venture to guess that I have close to 2,000 CDs and LPs (not to mention cassettes and music DVDs) and there is simply not enough time to sit down and listen to all of them...and most of them are to my liking or I would have never purchased them. That said, I guess I still average purchasing 75-100 albums a year. Maybe when I get to retire (like dragon :D) I'll be able to devote more time to listening.

I can say that I'd rather listen to them(playing basically the same song in different styles) than bands such as "Hootie and the Blowhards....I mean Blowfish" and the list could go on and on and on and on and on and on.......

    Dragon....Foo Fighters ROCK!!!

Hey Zero, if you like Ella and Billie, I'd recommend you check out the "New York Voices" (http://www.newyorkvoices.com)

    Old-school jazz sound, awesome arrangements.

Been one of my favorites for 19 years. Got Flood in 8th grade and never looked back.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I'm always hearing new music that I want to check out, yet consistently draw a blank when music shopping and end up buying something I've already heard.

For instance, I just bought my third version of the Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" and replaced a long lost copy of an album by the Adolescents. What I'd like to buy is something by The Gordon Stone Band (can't go wrong with "funkabilly jamgrass", IMO) and the new Neko Case. Or the MMW album with Cloud Wars on it, or some Tony Joe White, or.....
