Is this a good receiver / speaker match?

So, I've got a receiver: the Marantz SR7002. I'm seriously considering getting the Polk LSi 15s for my fronts, LSiC for my center, and a pair of LSi F/X to complete a 5.1 set-up (with the ability to upgrade with another pair of LSi F/X to 7.1 down the road... when I get a bigger room). Note that I plan on my sub being the Sunfire HRS-10 or 12, unless someone tells me that's a poor choice...

I'm a little concerned about the ohm variance between the speakers (nominal impedance of 4 ohms) and the receiver (8 ohms to fronts). I've done some research on ohms (I'm somewhat new to this whole "audio" thing), but I know I have more to do... but I still don't totally understand the relationship between an ohm rating on speakers vs the ohm rating on the amp.

While I may have to upgrade my receiver a few years down the road (I'm ok with that)... I don't want to under-buy for the speakers. I want speakers that will really last me and deliver high quality sound. Which is why I want the LSis, but will the ohm difference jeopardize this match?

My room size is probably medium/small. I'd really appreciate any thoughts you experts have!

Thanks for the quick reply and the welcome. :)

That is some good information to have! It's weird, I know so much about video... and I know so much jack squat about audio. Uhg. At least I'm learning.

I was torn between the LSis and the RTis... but now, you've just made my choice much simpler! As another plus, they are cheaper (especially if I go with the RTi A7s for my fronts).

Now I just need to start a thread about that sub...

Cool! Thanks for those links. My budget for a sub is anywhere from 600-1600... but I also want to get something that is a suitable match for my other speakers (e.g. I don't want to get a 1600 hundred dollar sub if it will totally overpower my speakers).

Anyway, I'll probably start up a fresh thread for this in the not-too-distant future, if only to get responses from some more people (that not being the real subject of this thread), but I really appreciate your answers and links!

    I like these forums already!

First off - what are you planning on doing with the speakers? Since you're up to date on video tech, i'm assuming it's for a home theater?

If you really like the LSI line - then you'd need a separate amp - but good new is that you can find a very good 5 channel amp that will drive them well for well under $1k (closer to $500 really) as long as you're willing to get used (which i've heard isn't bad at all with amplifiers). I haven't experienced the RTi line - but i can tell you the LSi line is amazing. Also - with a separate amp, you don't have to worry about receiver upgrades working with speakers anymore in the future either. Just make sure they have pre-outs and you're good to go.

As far as sub, if you're going HT, get the best you can afford - really. The sub is what makes all the difference in the world with a HT setup - and i wouldn't worry about anything overpowering your speakers. Get what you can and then fine tune it to the sound you want. It's always better to have that extra when you need it rather than to try to accommodate something less and then find yourself wishing later that you didn't lose anything in the low frequency because your sub just can't push it out that well down low - if that makes sense.

if you're setting up a simple audio arrangement, then the sub selection becomes less important - from what i've read.

Welcome to CP (kinda weird to welcome another when i'm still fairly new here) - it's a great place with a lot of knowledge as i'm finding out!
Not my setup - but what I have put together for a friend (i.e. what mine would be if i had the money to invest :D )
    Front: 2 x LSI-9
    Center: LSI-C
    Rear: 4 x M10
    Sub: Elemental Design A2-300
    AVR: Onkyo TX-SR806
    Amp: Acurus 200x3
    BD: HTPC
    Television Programming: Dish ViP722
    Video: Epson 6500UB Front Projector

Thanks for the advice, Huntley. I actually decided to go with the RTi line, went with the A7s. I'll let you know how they are when I get them! While they may not be quite as awe inspiring as the LSi, I suspect I will be quite happy. Plus, the drop in cost down from the LSi line will allow me to up my budget on a sub somewhat.

This isn't actually an upgrade of a HT system... it's and upgrade to a HT system. My TV has a spectacular picture and great sound... for a TV, but this is my first foray into the sound side of HT, so I know the upgrade will be incredible. My speakers will be here within the next 10 business days or so and I can't wait to hook them up!

Velodyne is a good choice in subs. check them out if you have a chance. btw welcome to 'The Club'
Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -
