Just picked up an AVR-146 from hk to power basement ceiling speakers. I have no sound! Driving me up the wall lol. let me go over the basics.
I have power
I have mute off
I tested the speakers and all work
I used a surround mode and stereo
I plugged in an ipod and tried the am radio
I did not hookup all 5 speakers at once. Could this be a reason?
Is there a way i could check and see if i am geting voltage out of the speaker jacks do they make such a tool?

Not familiar with the HK 146, how do you have your source connected? Make sure you have the right source selected for the input that it is connected to. i.e. if you have it plugged into the DVD audio input make sure you select DVD for the source, if you have it connected to HDMI 1 in select HDMI 1.
You may also need to go in and tell it what speakers you have connected.
Just saw you tried AM radio so stick with that as your source for troubleshooting, that will eliminate cables and source issues, just make sure you have a stationed tuned that you know you will get a strong signal.
Does the 146 have A and B speaker outputs? Make sure you have your main speakers connected to A and A is selected.
Good luck -
I have the very similar 147. As apphd has suggested, I would check that you have the correct source selected. It should play with just the two mains connected for troubleshooting, whatever you do. I've never used the AM radio on mine, but even if you just connect a DVD to the DVD input, and then select DVD as the source it should work.
The sound will need to be up around -30 or -20 before it is likely to get loud. It would probably be very faint at -40 or below. Do not go above 0 until you know what you are doing (and even then, it's probably a bad idea).
The menus are fairly easy to navigate IMO, although some specifics take a little thought. Since this model does not have EzSet/EQ, you'll have to get an SPL meter to calibrate your speakers correctly for surround sound. If they are efficient, you should be very pleased with the performance. The remote is ridiculous junk IMO, so I would get a Harmony, or at the very least a Sony RM-VL600

Well called HK, They say send it back. Well opened up that bad boy tested all the leads with the VM and then put the vm on the amp and walla we instantly had sound...must of been some built up static or something from shipping. IT works FOR NOW.
