Virus at midnight

Anyone know about the virus that supposed to start at midnight? There's supposed to be something you can do about it. Any info? I just had to completely redo everything a month or so ago when my hard drive mysteriously erased itself of everything on it. I don't want to go through that again...major PITA!!!

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article5960303.ece

Hopefully it's just an April Fool's joke.

I wonder if unplugging my PC from the cable will help. Probably will do it anyway just to be safe.

From my understanding, it would already be on your cpu. Update windows and run any spyware program that you may have. I read that the bug would not allow you to enter safe mode, so that is a way to test. Also, no clicking on the dancing bikini girl pop ups tonight :D

I rarely get any pop-ups. Actually just started getting a few a couple days ago which is why I'm worried.

I'm downloading the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool like they are suggesting.

The powers that be says to test if this virus is on your computer, surf over to a well known antivirus site, like

    www.symantec.com

    or

    www.mcafee.com

The virus has code in it that wont allow your brower to bring it up.

Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. Could be nothing, an april fools joke or the end of civilization as we know it....

No malicious software found on my puter, including conficker. That may be what took my hard drive down last month, who knows.

It's supposedly the release date/time for next-gen variant of conficker. The purpose seems to enlarge on an existing conficker bot-net of an estimated 10 million computers worldwide. Originates supposedly in Eastern Europe- no surprise there.

One of the things it was doing was to market supposed antivirus software online for download which was actually malware.

As mentioned, updated AV definitions, Windows updates & patches are recommended. I went over to my mom's earlier to upgrade her XP Home which was still on SP1. Her machine was apparently updating when I left, but I told her she might just have to leave it off tonight.

    Should be interesting.

I updated everything tonight, XP Pro, AVG, Spybot. I'm still going to unplug the cable at midnight. I just wonder if it's someone else's midnight or when your puter thinks it's midnight. AVG scan found no infections either.

Unplugging your pc from the internet will not help. The virus in itself does nothing, however when you connect to the internet, this is where it will get instructions to execute itself. So, even if you avoid the time frame for it to become active, it will still manifest. I believe depending on where it gets its instruction, the affects will be different.

Mac users need not worry, this does not apply to you peeps.

I recommend Malwarebytes. It works marvels and its free.

Well, I just downloaded and installed Malware, ran a quick, and full scan. Both came back that I had stuff in my registry.

Having crap in your registry doesn't mean much, unless explorer or some other internet centric app has been highjacked, probably by spyware. The registry just gives configuration settings for when an application boots and the locations of files to auto load. Most of these malware require files to be stored off somewhere and the registry is updated to auto run them.

Some of these malware will open all sorts of vulnerabilities via the registry too, such as back door ports for the application to access the net via the background or turn on Explorer to run any old app that may be presented in the background via a webpage. Could be left over entries from a previous infection.

My hard drive was completely erased last month and every scan I've ever done since says their are registry errors. I just ignore that ****.

I just downloaded McAfee Security Suite. I get it free from Comcast. Got rid of the AVG free stuff. The McAfee scan found nuttin.

I figured, after ya'll said it wouldn't make any difference I'd just ride it out. The good thing was I got everything updated and ridded myself of the AVG and put McAfee on board. I had completely forgot that Comcast provided it for free with their broadband.

The scary part is that you could still use your computer just fine and not understand the effects of the virus. Like you, I am still sitting here on my computer, however, my personal info, data and key strokes could be captured without knowing.

Well...it's 8 minutes past midnight right now. I think the virus got me...because there are a bunch of flames coming out of my computer. Is that normal? Should I be worried about this?

All this hype reminds me of Y2K, when every computer was suppose to crash and everything that ran off a computer processor was suppose to die or think it as 1900.

silly really. so much hype, not by the media this time.. but by internet wacko's.
