Oh come on, today's pollen count is only 196. Wait until it gets over 2000! Then you will have trouble breathing! I remember back around 2000-2001 when it got up over 6000 for like a week straight (no rain). That was the year that all of a sudden, I developed asthma, at age 30!

Not fun. I'm not used to this. Last week I was admiring all the spring flowers, and this week I am stuffed and have a major headache. How long does this last around here?

OTC stuff? This is all new to me. When I was up near you I had only a week of pollen that bothered me.

If we get decent rain, it usually tapers off by the end of April, but certain pollens are still pretty bad through May. Some of the worst allergens are the ones that you don't see! The heavy pollen you see covering everything is mostly pine, which isn't considered a major allergen because the size of the pollen particle is too big to get into the system.

As far as medication, Claritin and Zyrtec are both available OTC. For Claritin, there are also generics (Loratadine) that are much cheaper. Of the two, Zyrtec is more powerful, but it will cause slight drowsiness, but its not near as bad as benadryl.

I was looking in the yard thinking about whacking a few trees. Then I went to the store and saw it was covering everything with no trees in the area:(

I had good luck with Allegra (my allergies have mostly subsided over the past few years, knock on wood). Claritin gave me cottonmouth like you read about.

Unfortunately, Allegra isn't available OTC. Rx needed. FWIW, I've been taking Claritin/Loratadine over the counter for about 5 years straight, every day to control my indoor allergies. No cottonmouth problems for me. The -D version might be worse because it includes a decongestant, but most people have no problems with regular Claritin.

Is that new? Granted this was five years ago but I definitely didn't have a prescription when I bought it last.

Allegra has never been OTC. You either had free samples from the Doc, had a script that you forgot about, or you are confusing Allegra with something else.

I must have had a script then; it's certainly possible, I'm forgetful as hell. Sorry for the confusion!

Depends on how bad your allergies are. Due to all the molds and mildews I am allergic to, it lasted months at a time.

I was on nose spray, Zyrtec-D and allergy shots before I moved to AZ. I still had to take benadryl around cats.

Moving to AZ was the best thing that happened to me, allergy-wise.
