What ever happened to BMG and Columbia house

I had a big part of a CD collection stolen about 7 -8 years ago by an old roommate, and I never replaced most of the CDs.

Well I wanted to start replacing those disks. I got most of them through the BMG/Columbia house CD clubs. You know the old 10 for a penny + shipping, buy 3 at regular price deals.

Looks like those services are long gone. I guess being replaced by mp3 download services. Not only are those mp3 generally inferior to the original CD, I can't even find mp3s for some groups - Tool being the biggest omission. Google searches just seem to bring up Mp3 downloads.

Any suggestions?

yep theyre gone! and with huge record companies closing down like Tower Records it will get harder and harder to find non mp3 format. Best buy here still has a nice collection of cd's and are getting in more and more records as well.

I looked at yourmusic, at least the selection they let you see without being a member is pretty poor for what I am looking for. No Tool, only 1 Korn, no Rage Against the Machine, heck even Billy Idol they only have a couple.

I always thought the selection from both services was lousy. Even back in the early 80's, once I chose my free discs, I always had a hard time finding enough discs I actually wanted to fulfill the contract.

Amazon has a better selection than just about anyone.

Your music sucks now! They hardly have anything other than Top 40 artists. Try searching for Ac/Dc; Metallica; Led Zeppelin; Fleetwood Mac; etc. they have nothing.

Half.com is a decent place. Just watch for iffy "condition" ratings.

As for Yourmusic.com, I love that site. Get almost all my CD's from them. The thing you have to keep in mind is that they are new, but constantly adding artists to their site. So try to be patient with their artist selection.

Sorry to say but Yourmusic.com has been around for at least 7 years and they used to have a GREAT selection. Their selection in the past 24 months or so has steadily declined. It's mostly very popular top 40 stuff and when it falls out of rotation they dump it as well.

I'd say they have 50% less titles than just 2-3 years ago. I remember when it was $4.99 a cd

BMG/YourMusic has gone to crap now. I have been a member for almost 15 years. In the last 6 months EVERY SINGLE ORDER has a title or two that is "currently out of stock" after I place the order. Funny thing...they still have it as available on the web site and have it available on YourMusic. It's typically one of the more popular titles or a SACD. They will tell me it is on back order for a month or two and then tell me it is no longer available even though it's still on the website.

I forgot to mention www.cduniverse.com , they also have a very large selection. Prices are still better at Amazon, but they do have some good deals occasionally.

with so many people downloading music.. you would think the price of CD's would actually drop.. but no... they still are over $12 usually.

Yourmusic has a good selection of jazz these days. They seem to have worked out some licensing with Verve, Blue Note, and Impulse, maybe others. For example, they have 23 selections available today by John Coltrane. They are hit and miss with back catalog popular/classic rock music, but they always have been. More so lately than when I joined. If something is available there, I'll get it there, else I go to other sources like Amazon that usually cost more.

Wuuuut? At least 7 years? Wow, I didn't know. Damn, they need to get their act together. Honestly, after getting some decent albums like Norah Jones and Coldplay's latest and such, there was nothing else to buy. But they keep sending me emails stating that they were adding artists, so I thought they were still kinda new and adding people...
