Did Monitor 5A Have Peerless Tweeters?

I picked up a pair of M5a's today and the first thing I did was JB Weld the MW6500s and seal the drivers.
I noticed the Tweeters looked a lot like the Peerless.
Did they use the Peerless in the 5A?

Joe bought "The Advent" speakers about a half hour or so after you left. I still have "The Advent 1"s. The foams are just starting to loosen up and I've got them on the floor instead of 28" off the floor. They sound much better now.
I'm listening to the 5A's now. Damned nice speaker on the big Sony V555ES and Denon DCD-570 cdp with Pink Floyd's "The Wall" going on.
I traded a Toshiba single tray DVD player and remote for them. I haven't even wiped them down. Only a couple of very small cabinet imperfections. Actually close to supernice condition. I've always been a fan of the "fused" tweeter protection Polks

Hi HB27, I get the impression that you've just re-foamed the surrounds on some Advent 1s, if so,and you wouldn't mind,could you tell me where the surrounds were bought, and what you think of their quality. Did the install go easy or was it a PITA ?? Thanks ! gdb

I use a gentleman in Florida for my "ODDs & Ends surrounds. Great guy, excellent service, product, price, and the best glue in his kits you can buy for surrounds I've seen in the 20+ years I've been doing this.
The "1" is actually an easy speaker to do. The only issue is getting all the glue off the frame. It's tough to get off. I use paring knives and a box cutter to get the glue off the frame. The surround on most goes under the cone and the leftover surround foam and glue comes off easy with the pairing knife. Like all recone/refoams it's just a matter of getting all surfaces super clean of dirt, residue, and chemicals that may affect adhesion.
Then you need to line up the voice coil. Usually the Advents are easy to do. They line well and have a fairly large tolerance between the coil and mag structure. I use a 30hz sine wave disc and float them out for the most part but it's not necessary as long as you float out the coil for smooth travel. here's who I use:

Monitor 5's popped my Polk cherry back in 1985....................I picked up a pair again about a year or two ago for my office rig. I chose to do a x-over refresh and the added the RD0194-1 to replace the original sl2000's and these thing sound fantastic!!!! Probably will be with me forever in one system or another.

Peerless 5A's are very, very nice. Enjoy them, they don't make 'em like that anymore!!

Thanks HarryB27 !!! I'm a technically challenged person, but I am fairly adept at doing exacting work, such as woodworking and auto mechanics. That said, I have no means or clue as to how to float with a 30hz sine wave. I have read that removing the dust cap and using shims or some sort of feeler gauge can substitute for the energized centering, so I guess I'll try that route and hope for success ! BTW have you ever thought about using the replacements for the "fried egg" tweeters ? Diehard purists think it's a sin,but I've also heard that they blend a little better with the woofers. Any thoughts ?? Thanks again, gdb

I have and it is a sin. I prayed to Henry for forgiveness. Looking to get a green fried egg, soon, for my Smallers.

Rick has some easy to follow instructions for a "manual" float out. No need on the Advent's to do it the hard way actually. They're actually very easy to do. If you get in trouble I'll walk you through it on the phone.
You'll enjoy the finished product even more knowing you had a hand in bringing a good vintage pair of speakers back to life.
On the "replacement tweeters". DON'T DO IT!!!. It's a "downgrade".

Harry, that's really good news, I had visions of trying to adapt my dial indicator to get very precise tolerances.:eek: I guess one way to look at it is, if I mess it up....I won't be any worse off than before....I'll still own a pair of fairly low value, non-operating speakers. If I DO pull it off, I'll do the 18 drivers in some old 901s too so I can sell em for cheap and put the money into some Sonicaps for some SDAs . Thanks, Geoff
