PSW-450I Pop???? Please help!

Hey everyone. As an avid Polk listener, I also sell Polk Audio at Circuit City as a Sales Counselor. The PSW 450 I use for showroom demo tends to "pop" or actually make a firecracker-type noise at higher volume when the Velodyne CT120/CHT12 subs run FLAWLESSLY at the same level. At first I thought it was just our sub at the store, but after installing a customer's system with the EXACT same sub, I encountered the EXACT same result. Does anyone have any idea what causes this to happen? Just for assurance, I've sent our showroom demo to our service center twice to have it tested and the woofer replaced but still yielding the same. It's tough to demo a sub that makes one cringe when it hits.

Thank you all in advance for your time!

Does it sound like the woofer bottom-ing out, or more like the amp being overloaded? Either way, I could see how that would turn a customer off of that model. You might try lowering the sub output level on the receiver and turning the volume on the sub up to compensate, if you haven't already. (I don't believe I've ever ventured into a CC demo room and found the tone controls and sub output set to anything less than the maximum.)

I have a little Polk PSW250 and a big PSW1200. I've never heard either of them make any untoward noises.....

I was going to post the same problem. Only I have the 350 not the 450. I won over 300 DVD's and play them all at high volumes. The ONLY dvd to give me the popping noise on high volumes is the new star wars dvd.

No other DVD, THX or not causes the sub to pop.

    I'm running a Denon 3801 with:

    Fronts: RT55i
    Center: CS400i
    Side Surrounds: f/x500i
    Rear Surrounds: f/x500i
    Sub: PSW350

    Any suggestions ?!?

    Thanks,

    Rick..

I think I just answered my own question. I found the other thread that mentions that the frequency goes down to 10hz in Star Wars.

Damn, that's just not possible with my setup.

I had this same problem with a JBL 10" sub. It made a 'pop'ing noise quite frequently, especially at low volume (almost like it was underpowered?). I have a friend with that same JBL sub and the same exact problem. My JBL sub died about a month ago and I'm not sure if the popping was an early indicator of the failure. The sub was only 2 yrs old and not heavily used.

I now have the Polk PSW350 and haven't heard any popping yet..not even during the new Star Wars DVD. Star Wars sounds amazing with the new sub.

    Reverse the two letters:

I meant to say "OWN" not "WON".

    That's kinda funny.

    Sorry,

    Rick..
