I don't know for sure, but try unplugging it for awhile. Maybe it will reset.
BTW, it's always a good idea to unplug gear when fooling around with them.Political Correctness'.........defined

unplug all speakers and check for short in runs. then re atach the speaker wire and turn on and plug in.

This is bad news, but everyones suggestions have been correct, leaving it off, and then trying it without anything plugged into it are good solutions. If they don't work then you probably blew something up when you touched two wires together and shorted it, in this case I hope you are still under warranty and can wait a month to get it back..

Wow - I never put mine into protect mode. Love my 787 though.
#1 RULE:
Always power down your reciever completly, when rewiring.
Call Onkyo!!!!!!!!!!
Then let me know what they say incase it happens to me. -
Check your manual and see if there is a re-set proceedure. I have the 696 and there is a re-set proceedure for the micro processor which resets to the default. Try that, and if it doesnt work CALL OINK! Good luck!Onkyo 696 receiver, Panasonic DVD RV31U,Polk RM6600 w/ 350 sub (rti28's 2nd zone), JVC Dual tape deck, MMF-2.1 Turntable, JVC 5010 CD R. Glad it worked out. But the way it was worded it has NO power and apparently that wasn't the issue. It WAS not in protect mode.

scottamp;
Sorry if my wording was incorrect....when the VCR was plugged in the mutichannel output, the receiver would power on for couple of seconds and they shut off. When I tried to power it up again..the display said PROTECT and it shut off after 2 seconds.Lsi9s front

I just finished installing some Zone 2 speakers and my Onkyo did this. The unit was powered off when wiring, and there were no short circuits.
I think one of the relays in the unit may be going bad. It's not the first time it went into protect mode, but it came right back alive after resetting and powering off/on without messing with the speaker wires (which verifies that there were no short circuits).
If anyone has this problem, it's a good idea to hold Video 1 + Power and it should reset like mine.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I'd go with what everyone else said. Unplug. Good luck.
