I have a chance to pick one of these up on the cheap (under $150) and was wondering if anyone has had any exp. with this amp? Its rated 125 watts a channel, will this be an improvement over my Sony STR DA2ES rated @ 100 watts a channel? I was going to use the pre out on the Sony for the Yamaha and just use it for the front mains which will either be some LS90's or SDA SRS 2.3's Thanks in advance. not actual pic.

In My Opinion Yamaha amps of this era the M and MX series were all show and no go. They had no balls and generally a very congested sound stage. Some also has this BS Super Class A circuit which was never really class A but a gimmick, IMO.

For less than $100, I'd say not much to loose.....over $100 there are many much more musical amps to be had from Adcom or Parasound, Carver, NAD, AMC or others that slip my mind right now.

I sold this whole series of amps when they were new and the Adcom 535 always had more balls, grunt, and sounded better, more natural than anything in the Yammy line up to and including the 350wpc boat anchor :D.

Again for the newbs or anyone else who wants to pick a fight........this is my opinion.

Agreed,Each of the big Japenese companies had their own variant of the sliding bias scheme ,JVC had Super A,Technics New Class A etc.

The amps did run cool and had very low THD,and IMD.But to achieve the superlative numbers so that they would look good on the spec sheet, high amount's of negative feedback were used. The end result was IMO that most of them sounded lifeless and rather sterile.

Threshold also had a sliding bias scheme in some of their earlier generation of amps, not surprisingly indications are it was a superior implementation.

While I'm not about to pick a fight with H9, I like my MX-800U, I think it depends more on the speakers used with it and the other gear, you know...synergy and all that stuff. :)

GFA 2 was a very early Adcom amp and the 535,545,555 are generally thought to be a more musical sounding amps. Those are the models that put Adcom on the map.....I'd stick to those.

Those weren't Yamaha's best efforts when they released that series. The pre you use is going to make a huge difference on whether this sounds decent with your speakers.
