How would you compare it to the Dodd ELP? Is there any hum?

I'll more than likely build my own pre. But I am still looking at others from certain manufactures. I figured if I come across a really stellar pre for a good price I might buy one instead of building one.

One of these just sold on A-gon for $650.00 with the same mods as yours. Thats not a bad price if the pre is as good as you say it is...

Also. Did you buy used or new? If new. Can you provide a link to where you bought it?

    Nick

The Dodd is a great pre,,I've owned two of them,, the mini uses different tubes than the Dodd as well,,with that said,I much prefer the mini, the resolution, detail and soundstage is incredible,it's like the performers are in the room with you, much more intimate, more air.I bought it used,,I think that they pop up on A'gon quite often. Very responsive to tube rolling.my suggestion,if you get one,,or any tube pre,,do not mess around on e-pay,etc,, get to a reputable dealer and buy NOS,, your ears will thank you,,with the right tubes,,it's hard to beat.

stock one--good price--IIRC the mods are 300.00---Bill @ Moringstar Audio

For $450 that's a steal! It won't last long. Nick- jump on this one and do the mods yourself.

BTW-- the pre is dead quiet,, the detail is so good it's almost scary. My wife said it was as if the musicans were in the room with us,, after listening to Neil Young @ the Canterbury House.

actually Ted,, you got me started with the Dodd MLP and the smoothplate tele's. I am a firm believer in quality NOS,,, they just can't/don't make em like they used to,try as they might..just my .02 worth---NOS Tubes rule.

George, what are those things that are connected to the tubes with wires that seem to lead to nowhere? I have not seen these in my audio journey before.....until now.

Also, I see some pic's with them on and also with them off. What difference [if any] do they make sonically?

Oh, congrat's on your new toy. New toys are cool......and tubes......well, I think RT1 covered that already. :D

I guess. I have never seen them before. What's with the wires?

You mean the ones that seem to/from from the pre amp and just disappear into the hole? It's a "channel" within the rack that has acess points on/corresponding to/with each shelf.

    George

Do you think that pre will go good with some SDA's? Always wanted to get into tubes but I don't know crap about tubes and tube rolling.

    Nice pre!

Yes,, BUT,, it is phase inverting,, so some adjustments will/would have to be made, because of the driver arrangement IIRC.Use the search function,, as there was a recent thread about this.I thought about keeping it with my 1C's,, but I found a Belles tube pre that has got some real synergy with the SDA rig, as I've mentioned before,, this is a killer pre, with the rught NOS tubes and the mods. Good luck.

It is said that he builds a tube pre with one tube, called the "one tube wonder" that performs far above it's looks or name.
