"TL" upgrade for SDA 1A?

Hi all.

It's been allmost three years since I were in this forum.
I have moved to a new appartement and now I have hooked the SDA 1a's up again and I still love these babies!..:)

I have listen to them with a wide variaty of music lately and I've noticed a "sound/noise" in the upper mid/lower high area.It sounds horrible, like it's blown in some odd way.Doesn't matter if it's loud or not,but it gets worse the higher the volume.

I've read a few TL conversions posts,but they're all about the 2B's.

I have the SL2000 "silver coil" tweeters, and if I have to change them out I just might go for a better solution to make them even better.

So,if the TL conversion is possible, how much am i looking at?

Tweeters, capacitors, resistors,? and if,God forbids, the midrange driver is bad, how much are they?

And final question,is the 1A's 4,6 or 8 ohms?

Thank you for replies.

    Welcome back g-man.

There's no easy way to change the HF section of your crossover to accommodate the TL upgrade. What I would suggest is to upgrade your SL2000 tweeters to the silk dome RD0194-1 as they will present a smoother sound.

Crossover upgrades will also result in an improved sound, but the cost varies with the components selected.

Your speakers are 4 ohm loads.

    Thank you F1nut.

Can I just replace the tweeters to RD0194-1, and use the same components in the X-over?
No new components needed like capacitors, resistors?

And i guess all four tweeters have to be changed...

You can learn more about your 1A's in the Sticky: FYI POLK AUDIO - Speaker Wiring Schematics - Stereo Dimensional Array(SDA) posted by DarqueKnight at . . .

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55888

The http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=31010&d=1201824729 link . . . is your schematic in Adobe Acrobat pdf format.

As F1 stated, it's a challenge to introduce the capacitor/resistor the RDO198-1 reqires for proper performance into the old high frequency circuit in your cabinets.

I replaced SL2000's with RDO194-1's in my SDA SRS 2's and the improvement was very noticible and good. With perserverence, I was finally able to adapt the RDO198-1, but its introduction into your circuit looks more problematic.

The RDO194-1 is a direct replacement for your SL2000's with absolutely no other modification of the crossover required and should be a pleasant improvement.

G Man, I'ts been said by more than a few members here, that dropping down to a single tweeter on the 1As will make for a better image/soundstage,and the later editions of those all deleted the dimensional tweeter. I don't know the electronics part at all, or if any changes are needed on the crossover, but it might be worth it for you to investigate the possibilities. A nice bonus is that 2 RDOs are cheaper than 4 !! I've got a pair of 1As that I'd like to re-do the baffle on so that the tweeter will be positioned the same as the later models,(centered) and if possible without a lot of XO mods, go with 2 tweeters per cabinet like the newer ones have. Good luck !!:)
