    Looks like that's gonna be a killer Blu-ray player. If it's based on the SA-7S1 it damn well should be. Looks like it's going to be very expensive too. The SA-7S1 retails for 6500...what do ya think this one's gonna go for? 8000ish?

    Well...That's not cheap by any means, but less than I expected. I'm sure it's gonna be something pretty special though, being based on the top of the line Marantz CDP.

    If i may be allowed to demonstrate my ignorance here without doing any searching of my own - i'm just curious...

    What are the advantages of dropping more than my car is worth on a BD Player when i can go get a Sony or Panasonic for around $200 now? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything - i genuinely want to know what it is about varying BD players that would cause someone to put a large bit of money into it.

    Not my setup - but what I have put together for a friend (i.e. what mine would be if i had the money to invest :D )

    Just guessing here, but I would expect the design goal to be state of the art performance for Blu-Ray and DVD video, and all supported audio formats. If the rest of your equipment is not capable of handling state of the art then it is not worth it. On the other hand, if your equipment, along with your eyes and ears, can discern nuances of differances in video and audio then, maybe, $6K is a good deal.

    Granted, next year, others will have the same thing for 3K, or less.

    As a side note, you need a new car.

    If I was wealthy and had loads of money to burn, it might be a different story.

    Well...The point with that player is that it's also a VERY capable CD player. Being based on the top of the line Marantz CDP...I'd hope so anyway.

    It's not that you're paying 6k for a Blu-ray player...you're paying 6k for a CD player that is going to blow the majority of CDP's out of the water, in addition to also playing DVD's and Blu-ray's. It's catered towards the audiophile that doesn't want several different source components.

    I'd be willing to bet it's worth every penny. Is it as good as an equivalently priced dedicated CDP? I rather doubt it...but it will be almost as good, and just happens to also play Blu-ray discs.

    Especially if it can pause itself, open the fridge and grab me a beer. That's a huge bonus. Ya know how much time that'd save me?...lol

    That is a good point. On the other hand, I would assume engineering know-how, and Moore's Law, should be making it easier, and less expensive, to design better equipment each year, so universal players should be getting close to being as good as most dedicated CD/DVD players. They might be expensive, but they should work. Reliability is another issue. A side bonus is we are using digital sources, and not vinyl, for audio and video.

    Hey don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth it. Just for me personally it would be hard to swallow spending 6k for one piece of gear. But who knows, I'm still fairly new to all this, so maybe one day I will, who knows!

    Agreed. I'm definitely not planning on getting one anytime soon...lol

    That's a whole lot of dough to spend on a Blu-ray player...even if it is a stellar blu-ray player and stellar CD player on top of that. That's more than the entire worth of my whole rig though...so it wouldn't really be justified.

    For the guy that has an 8000 dollar pre-pro, 15,000 dollars in amplification and 20 grand in speakers though...it's very justifiable. This is where I picture myself in another 15 years or so.:p For the time being though...I think I'll do fine with my Cambridge DVD89 universal player. I payed 110 bucks for it used, it has a great DAC...excellent audio quality...very capable DVD playback...SACD playback even. It's not the end all by any means...but it works great for me right now.

I really want to try a dedicated CD player though, and preferably something that plays SACD's (my PS3 doesn't) since I would like to see how they sound as well. I can't afford one at the moment, but when I can, I'd be willing to spend $500-$1000 for something decent. I've yet to really do any research on dedicated CDP's though.

    That's another mod that I've got planned for later on this year. That's probably the last thing I'll do this year actually. I'm in roughly the same price range as you.

    Check out the Marantz SA-8003 and the NAD M5. The Marantz retails for 1000, and goes for around 750 or so used...the NAD retails for about 1600, but sells for around 900ish used. These are the main two I'm considering...I'm leaning towards the NAD though for the most part. It has balanced outs, plus multi-ch. analog outs, which are both pluses. Both of them have SACD playback.

    That Marantz is gorgeous for sure...but I wouldn't be surprised if the new Oppo BD player coming out can go toe to toe with it. It might not win on all accounts but it will definetely hold it's own. Based on price & performance, I'll bet the Oppo will come out on top.

    IMHO gear on this level does have a subtle improvement in performance over less costly gear, In much the same manner as a Ferrari has a slight performance advantage over a Corvette in most cases. The reason to buy such expensive gear really boils down to the old mine is better than yours philosophy as most ears will never hear a difference. Those ears that can will benefit... another thing about ultra high end gear of any kind is aesthetic appeal, and it is here that I appreciate the differences the most. A majority of the uber-end gear is just as much a work of art visually as it is functional.

    If I had more money than I knew what to do with, my system would be radically different... even though my ears may not hear it, my eyes would!
