HI all, this is my first post and I really need some advice! Here's a little about me, I've been patiently waiting to get out of my old apartment building into my new house to get a HT system. I'll be using the system for about 50% music and 50% movies. I am not that knowledgeable on the speakers I'm interested in and unfortunately there is no where near me to go test drive the speakers. I want to get the best bang for my buck and I figured this would be the best place to go for advice.

Anyway, I'm looking at TSi 500 or the VM30's and I just can't figure out what would be better for my set up. Also, they are the same price at $400 a piece. I figured thats an awesome deal for either one. If I decide on the TSi's I will go with the rest of the TSi series for HT. What would you recommend for to finish out the VM30's?

The VM30s are 2000 dollars a pair the VM20s are closer in price to the Tsi-s. The VM series is upscale from the TSI, designed for excellent sound dispersion and aesthetic fit in mid-sized well-decorated rooms where large towers would be too intrusive. I have not heard this series but I would imagine that it's aluminum dome tweeter is much superior to the silk/polymer in the Tsi. If you check the product link above Polk specifies which systems are best for these expensive towers. I think they recommend all VM20s center and surrounds along with the Polk 600 series sub. That's going to cost you at least twice or more than a comparable TSI system so price wise these two systems ARE NOT in the same league. It is the VM20s that are closer in pricing to the TSi-s but even there those systems are quite different.

At about 500 a piece you would need at least 3 VM20s (1500) two VM30 tower (2000) and a 600 sub at (680)...that's a MSRP of 4380, if you add two more VM10s for back surrounds a lot closer to 5000.

The TSi-s you would have 2 tsi-500s (800) a CS20 (350) and maybe 2 TSi-200s (300) you could stay with the same sub (680) or 2130 half the price of the VM.

What I would recommend is that you consider an Rti series system if you want the best bang for your buck. Get two Rti-A5s (900 a pair), Rtii-A6 (450) center, the Rti-A1s (340 a pair) surrounds and stick with the 600 sub at (680). (2370) a bit more than the TSI series but also a bit better and a great starter system you can upgrade (the fronts in the future). BTW...look to buy these one piece at time from Polk's direct ebay site and you can get them a lot cheaper if you're patient.

I always thought soft dome (silk/polymer) were superior to the hard dome (metal). Am I thinking crazy things?

It really depends on design, execution and build. I've heard alum domes sound sweet and creamy, while some soft dome sound harsh and brittle. Not to mention the x-over circuit design or the gear powering said speakers, essentially its alot deeper than just the material's used building the tweeter.

The usual is soft is a less harsh, with a metal dome being more precise. But it is all subjective, being that we all hear a bit different and have different musical taste's.

All in all, dont count something out until YOU have heard it.

    Poeer7R,

Is right, I own Polk montors with silk domes and also vintage JBL Studios with the pure titanium diaphragm diamond dome. The Metal JBL dome is actually the smoother sounding tweeter, no harshness at all. Part is the tweeter design, crossovers and other design features mentioned above. The aluminum/alloy inverted domes in Focal towers also sound very revealing but smooth. I haven't heard those Polk domes but I imagine something similar....has anyone listened to or owned the VM series here???

If those prices are legitimate and Polk recognized the seller (I think they do). Then there is your system. Go for it! Fantastic pricing.

Haha, I was just about to post the prices and compare the TSI to VM. It's only 130 more to get the VM series w/out the sub. I think I will be ordering this when I get home, before the wifey gets home that is!:D
