Well been a lil while since I did a Classical review.
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 4; Mass In G Minor; 6 Choral Songs
I got this one off evil bay purely by accident.....how you ask?
I saw it for $7.50 + $2.98 = $10.48 MINT condition.
I saw it was a Penguin Guide Rosette winner and jumped all over it.
Normally a $15+ cd. Low and behold it was a "Hybrid" SACD!!
Anyway it's a absolutely spectacular CD as per it's Rosette rating.
A real pleasure to just sit back and enjoy with a nice glass of wine.
But then again I find very little it any Vaughan Williams I don't like.
Keep your eyes peeled around on Ebay and where ever for this one reasonable.
VERY worth getting and even more so on "Hybrid" SACD.
Presto Classical has the standard version for $11.99 + $3 shipping(Limited Time Offer).

Amazon has the "Hybrid" SACD for just under $15 total

Jim, Vaughan Williams is also one of my favorite composers and I have three complete sets of his symphonies plus many individual discs. I've had the CD of the Hickox performance of the 4th for about a year and like it as least as much as any of the other versions that I have(Boult, Daniel, Handley and Previn).
Anyone interested in the complete set of nine symphonies can find them at bargain prices from the usual U.S. and British sources(Amazon, MCD, Presto, Tower, etc.)for around $25-$30. The Boult set on EMI which includes several other fine VW compositions besides the symphonies is what I'd especially recommend. For a single disc to sample his output, the Previn disc containing his most gentle symphony(the 3rd)and his most vigorous(the 4th)would be a good pick to start with. -
Thanx for the input John!
I'm pondering over the VW Complete Symphonies myself.
I'm shuffling my collection around....sell some I'm not that crazy about and buy some award winners I'll like better.
Fun thing to pass the cold damp weather by.
