Need help getting Linbrooks dialed in

I'm powering my Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Sig. System, 2 peice temporarily with a McCormack DNA-1 amp. I'm having trouble getting the bass dialed in, as it sounds way too bloated and loose. And I think I have a Big 55hz spike. I've plugged the port holes in the bass modules and installed the floor spikes which has helped but still needs more.

I'm spoiled because I'm used to having super tight clean bass with my Velo SPL 15" sub and SMS-1, so going from that to these bass modules is not even close. Any suggestions to tighten up the bass modules? Maybe now is a good time to invest in some bass traps? I also thought perhaps my speakers are over powering my room. It's 17'x36'x12'. My livingroom opens up to a kitchen and a loft, with high ceilings and wood floors/wood ceiling. I can post a pick if that would help.

I would play with position before investing in any acoustic stuff; speaker's position and also listening position, if that's an option. Bring them further away from walls, get them closer together, or further apart, etc. See where you get the tightest bass, and then you can put the traps (GIK acoustics worked for me).

Or, maybe you're trying too hard to make them work...and should keep the Dynaudios ;)

They are approx 8' from the rear wall and are very close to the side walls. They are approx 7' apart from each other. I can't move the left speaker closer to the wall because then it blocks the downstairs entrance.

Based on your positioning, it will be tough to set up your speakers properly. The right speaker doesn't have any room at all to breathe. I can certainly understand why your bass is bloated. It's gonna require drastic measures. Can you do a 180 degree on the room setup?

I'm not at that bridge yet. I owe it to these Linbrooks to try to create an environment so that they sound their best. If after my efforts and I'm still not satisfied then I could sell the bass modules and use the velo with the monitors or keep the Dynos with the velo. Lots of options here.

PS- This McCormack is on loan from a friend, I'm thinking about splurging and getting a Pass Labs amp! I've been locked into the vicious upgrade bug and can't shake it.... not that I'm really trying too hard. :p

What's the wattage of that amp? The Linbrooks are pretty efficient, but that's a pretty big space to fill in. Just thinking out loud here.

The McCormack is I believe 180wpc. Here is a quick sketch of my floor plan. I'm thinking more about what Early said to move it all to the other side of the room. I'm thinking I'll have the same problem having to nestle one of the speakers into that right corner by the sliding door. I live alone, so I could move things anywhere.

OK, but if you move the speakers to the other side of the room, it appears as though you will have a lot more options for speaker placement. Of course, there's only one way to find out. Set your system up temporarily on the other side of the room and see if it improves the sound.

Have you tried the Sumiko setup?

Man, you have a challenge before you for acoustics. Wow.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. No way to know for sure unless I try it. I think I'll start with just using some long length speaker wire and just moving the speakers there and keep all the gear in the same place. This project will have to wait for the weekend....

Hey Dog, how are things sounding now? I'm about to try the Sumiko setup on my rig tonight.

I started this thread almost a year ago. Well, when I moved my rig to the other side of the room, it solved the problem of bloated/loose bass. Now bass is tight as a whistle.

These speakers are keepers for sure. I was listening to tunes last night and Holy **** it sounds good from top to bottom and a Humongous sound stage, easily fills the room. I was listening to Diana Krall's "The girl in the other room" and her voice is lush and velvety. Notes hang in the air. I also noticed that the music really comes alive at higher volumes. Next week my new Marantz Reference SACD player comes and I'm sure it will take my rig to a new level. After that I'm calling it quits, assuming it's a synergistic match. If anything, I may upgrade to some MIT cables down the road.....

    Congrat's on the new toy.
