Mozart, others, on my Monitor 12's

I was impressed.
I derived way more emotion and enjoyment out of my listening session tonight than a pair of 18 yr old speakers should be able to give me. At least, that's was my opinion
I'd run some lower quality MP3s, AACs, and MP4s through my iPod Photo... and wasn't blown away by anything... except maybe Daft Punk. Anything of theirs I threw out, regardless of encoding, sounded awesome.
I went through my archive and pulled off some of the better digital files... some Rush, some piano pieces, David Gilmour, Warren Zevon, Tori Amos, this fantastic version of Fortunate Son by Cat Power... all on my iPod Touch.
Wow. Mozart's Requiem... like, my defacto emo listen as a HS senior in 89... almost brought me to tears... Well, that one of my Grannies died Saturday probably had something to do with it, but the vibration of the strings was stirring
I think my library of modern European Black Orchestral/Operatic Metal comes through a little muddied, though
Anyhow.
Thanks to all who helped answer my questions when I snagged these on the cheap.
Well worth the pittance I paid

Glad to hear some else is happy with their old 12's. Dont get much positive feedback about them but i can't get rid of mine. I have gone to sell them a number of times but always back out at the last minute. Will upgragde the crossovers and tweeters soon and freshen them up.
Have been listening to Norah Jones of late and her voice and piano just sound unreal. Dire Straits Telegraph road album is fantastic with the lights off.:cool:2 Channel

Sorry to hear about your Granny.
I have similar experience with my RTA11TL's after upgrading. I am still astonished even on my humble system. I recently got a copy of Dianna Krall "The Girl In The Other Room" on SACD and I get totally lost in the music. Same with Handel's Water Music also on SACD.Stan

Braddles:
Been particularly pleased with women's voices.
And, yeah, more than the other models I read about here, the 12's are either love or hate. I think they'll match up nicely with my 5jr's in an oldie surround setup.
skrol:
My friends and I are at the age when we're losing Grandparents, and Parents aren't as resilient as they used to be. It's a new thing for most of us. And I have to add, elder care in the US sucks. Not just assisted living stuff, but the medical community (especially in rural areas) just doesn't do right by them.
But I digress
Handel! I'll try some of that tonight.
Ya'know, I've got a pair of 501's I use as my workshop speakers... I wish I could justify putting the 12's in their place... I just can't treat them so poorlyThe Thrifty Setups in Mah House Big thrifty stereo in the basement w/ my custom SDA-1C (built with help from kind forum members) * Beautiful 1966 MCM GE console upgraded w/ Bluetooth, Dual turntable, and Paradigm speakers in family room * Swanky 1980 Realistic system and great TEAC eq with dancing colored lights in the living room * custom 5B on a system for my Dad * Ye Olde college stereo in the garage -

its always about the SDAs, sometimes i think the SDA owners look down on us. just kidding, i would love a pair of SDAs.
[LAUGHS]
Yeah, I think I caught a whiff of some SDA snobbery at some point, too
I hope my 2 pairs of Polks aren't the pinnacle of my cheap vintage Polk-finding. I think a pair of SDAs would fit quite nicely... ummm... *somewhere*
SACD and DVD-A (and whatever else there is) question for respondents: Are they really (I know, this is a silly question) *that* much better than CDs?
As I may have mentioned (too lazy to go back and check my posts), I can honestly say I hit the wall with a lot of the MP3s I listened to. It was really easy to sense... well... how to put it... If it was a lower-end encode, I definitely *felt* a difference in the music. Hard to explain
Anyhow, time to get back on LaLa, trade out CDs like crazy, and re-encode some stuff. The Thrifty Setups in Mah House Big thrifty stereo in the basement w/ my custom SDA-1C (built with help from kind forum members) * Beautiful 1966 MCM GE console upgraded w/ Bluetooth, Dual turntable, and Paradigm speakers in family room * Swanky 1980 Realistic system and great TEAC eq with dancing colored lights in the living room * custom 5B on a system for my Dad * Ye Olde college stereo in the garage -
hey i love my 12s, rdo 198s make a big differance, upgrading my xovers as soon as the parts get here, i cant wait, i think the monitor 12s are one of polks most underated speakers, i dont know why they dont get much respect, its always about the SDAs, sometimes i think the SDA owners look down on us. just kidding, i would love a pair of SDAs.

EBAY is like cocaine. At first you only look, next thing you know, your house is full of crap you have no idea why you own. -
I have a set of SDS SRS 2.3's and am getting a set of Monitor 12's tommorow in the a.m. I also have a set of Monitor 10B's. I currently use the SDS's and 10's in my HT and will ad the 12's for the L & R surrounds and the 10's will go to the rear surrounds. My room is over 6000 cu ft and my current setup fills the room. There is nothing better than the BIG monitor sound for entertainment.

Good lord. That's a big speaker home theater. My wife would murder me.
She loves me, but I'd be dead.
Maybe one day I can find another pair of M12s, and a pair of SDAs... and build a room to fit them in

It's just our living room at 18 X 28 X 14 (cathedral ceilings, lodge style). The setup works better then I expected.
